Show Page 4, The SunNews, Wednesday, March 2, 1994 RedmondNews With the much anticipated behind HardingKerrigan skate-of- f 1994 Winter the and ns, Olympic Games becoming a part of a long ::: history, I thought it would be inter- -' esting to explore some of the annuals of the Olympiad and share some of it " with you here. : ; The ancient Olympic Games were celebrated every four years at Olympia on the bank of the river Alpheus in Greece, a sacred place to the Greek People. Just when the games began and who founded them is not really known, but a list of the winners is kept beginning in 776 B.C. and ending in 394 A.D., a period of 1,170 years. After the Greeks were conquered, the games were outlawed. In 1 894 Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman, thought it would be a good idea to hold a special athletic event to promote world peace and friendship. He presented his idea at a meeting of international sports leaders, and everyone agreed it would be beneficial to all. The Hrst modem Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece, to honor the ancient Greek games. Since then, the Olympics have been held every four years except for the years 1916, 1940 and 1944 when many of the countries of the world were at war. The first Olympic Games were held in 1924. While modem Olympic athletes compete for bronze, silver and gold medals, the ancient athletes were awarded prizes of crowns made of wild olive from the sacred tree. In the days of old, the winner of any event was taken home in triumph, and was sometimes supported by the public for the remainder of his life. Todays athletes are often offered endorsements or contracts which has about the same effect. On to other things....
