It has been good in many ways. The highlight has been the robust economy of this great state and the revenue that has been generated to address the needs of the people. It are fortunate to live here in this choice state. We will be working nonstop I believe that our states prosperity is due to its citizens and the unique qualities that they exhibit. The people of Utah are famous for their work ethic, family orientation, theses last few days to meet our Wednesday midnight deadline. I hope I will be able to inform you next week that all is well and rural Utah achieved all the legislation priorities that we expected. It has been a very successful session for me and I am grateful for those of you who have contacted me with your concerns and input. Knowing how people feel on different issues truly helps make my job easier. Please continue to feel free to contact me after the session is over with your concerns and input. Thank you for your confidence and support. honesty, integrity, educational excel- lence, and other qualities that make this state a great place to live, raise a family and work in. I am concerned however, that the prosperity is not universal among all of our citizens and all areas of the state. It must be a high priority to address this problem. I am also concerned with the fact that the government is growing twice as Legislative Report Mike Styler yourself. 529-783- Time is running out to com5 Utahs budget. This plete must adjourn by years Legislature Midnight March 2. As new revenue projection come in it appears that our 1994-199- The first flag of the U.S. was unfurled on Jan 1, 1776 and called the Grand Union. economy is booming. The revenue comes from three main sources: 1. State taxes. 2. Income taxes and 3. Property taxes. The big jump in sales taxes indicate that many people have been buying new cars, building maet terials for construction and other items. There are many legislators urging caution in spending this new found tax money. The increase in tax revenue from last year to this years appears to be close to $340 million. Many legislators have been insisting on a tax cut and it now appears though both legislative leadership and the Governor are agreeing on some type of tax reduction. It is important to me to see some of this money put into savings to take care of some future urgent need. There ership to make it a 5 increase. We will be putting $35 million in the state rainy day fund. It looks like the rural caucus may be successful in getting some money for water development (the Narrows Project above Fairview may benefit from this) and I am confident that extra money for Wildlife Resources will allow the Ephraim experiment station to survive. I am excited about a new proposed law that has to do with child welfare reform. No one can live on borrowed money forever, a nation, business or individual will only reap economic bankruptcy if they try to do so. White also said that the nations economic freedom is being suppressed by the regulatory choke hold from government regulation in all areas of society. We need to work for a better balance. It really boils down to us as citizens. We need to be responsible, choose good leaders, be willing to make adjustments in our lives so that the debt and budget problems can be We have to be willing to live within our income as a nation.
