And not the least of these Is the bungalow for, In spite of all that has been said against It, the bungalow continues to multiply, apparently thriving on the humor produced at , Its expense. In the smaller centers this single-storie- d home holds an undisputed place which, thanks to Its lack of wearying stairs, It will undoubtedly maintain for all time. For this lack of alone the bungalow has won a place In the heart of the American, housewife who finds stairclimbing an unwelcome addition to the labors of her long and tiresome ' stair-climbin- g day. This bungalow Is one of the modest but thoroughly substantial type which we see being built wherever families A front gable projects to cover the porch, that fast disappearing feature of the home which many people still desire for the comfort which It offers on warm summer evenings. From this porch entrance Is had to an interior which presents some interesting features. The arrangement of rooms Is highly compact, every Inch of space being used to good advantage. The idea of a central hall, so frequently seen in the square type of house such as various colonial designs, has been adapted here to a more complete use. The left side of the house is devoted to the living rooms while the right side contains the sleeping quarters and the two are separated by this central space extending the full length of the house. The front entrance opens Into a vestibule which occupies the first portion of this space, and In it there Is a coat closet where wraps may be deposited before entering the living room. The entrance to the living room is from this vestibule through an arched doorway. Back of the vestibule the central space contains a hallway which serves as a passage from the dining room into the sleeping portion and also contains the basement stairway. Still farther back there Is a closet opening from the rear bedroom and last of all a large pantty off the kitchen. Its position at the end of the space gives this pantry an outside window making it light and convenient. Between the hall and bedroom closet enough space Is taken to provide for the chimney of limited means are establishing permanent homes In order that they may have complete living comfort and The frame structure independence. set on a foundation of concrete blocks is sided with clapboards to the ceiling line above which shingles are used. On the opposite side the rooms are grouped about a small hallway, a front bedroom and a rear bedroom, each with a good closet, and the bathroom and a linen closet between the two. Finished Attic Is Colonial Hall Should a Dividend Payer Do the walls and foundations of your home yield you all the dividends you have a right to expect of them? They dont unless they afford you all the usable room they can carry. They are the main items in the cost of the house; they cost you almost as much if the upper half of the house Is unfinished and empty as they would if it contained livable rooms. If your home Is a high, with the upper portion unfinished, you are not getting the full return from your investment. Inexpensive remodeling will make it yield you more accommodation and more comfort. On the living side, the living room, dining room and kitchen appear in the order named with a door from the Have the Atmosphere If there is an open doorway of the colonial type in the hall It is highly desirable to paint and decorate both stairway and hall In true Colonial fashion. Most households have a few Colonial pieces not enough to furnish an entire house, or even one of the larger rooms, perhaps but enough to make a quaint and dignified Colonial hall if they are assembled together. The necessary alterations are not very expensive and improve the atmosphere of the home out of all proportion to their cost, since the first impression of a home Is the impression its hallway gives. Instead of the solid mahogany stair treads and hand rail, which our ancestors used to emphasize the good lines of the stairway, these, and also the molding of the paneling should be stained and varnished in a mahogany finish. The walls, banisters, risers, wall paneling and front door should be white or an ivory that Just misses being white. A Colonial door with its quaint paneling and pilasters and a parquet floor are good additional touches. A hooked rug on the floor, a bit of needlepoint .tapestry on the wall, a grandfathers clock and a Colonial bench are all the accessories needed.
