Show February 9, 1945 THE SOUTH CACHE COURIER JUNIOR LITERARY CLUB ENTERTAINED The Junior Literary Club were royally entertairied at the Verna Miller home on hursday evemni? Mr. Verna Mille, and Mrs. . U sillier were the hostesses. Mrs. Ellis Hansen in her usual charming manner reviewed two humorous stories, Taps for Private Tussie" by James Stuart and Love at First Flight by Charles Spalding and Otis Carney. Musical etnertainment was two piano solos by Miss Irene Eliason. A delicious luncheon was served to 26 club members and four guests: Mrs. Reba Glenn, Mrs. Garland Geary Mrs. Marva Hansen and Irene Eliason. Mrs. James Stoddard entertained at her home on Saturday night in honor of her twins, Keith and Carole who celebrated their birthday. The evening was spent playing some interesting games and luncheon was served to Marva Olsen, Joan Nielsen. Iris Williamson, Evan Allred, Eugene Larsen, ValRoy Bruce Albretsen, Boyd Wallace Petersen, David Petersen, Dean Jensen and the honored guests. Keith and Carole received many lovely gifts. et Ogden Aar Technical Service Command, Hill Field, Feb. 3 Dependents of deceased Army Air Forces personnel need and should not pay fees to any firm or individual to obtain payment of monetary benefits to which they are entitled, Col. Paul W. Wolf, commanding officer, Ogden Air Technical Service Command, stated today. In a letter to this command Lt Gen. Barney M. Giles, AAF deputy commandar, said information had been received that certain firms and individuals are using the mails to contact and solicit next of kin, offering to assist them, for a fee, in connection with pension applications Gen Giles points out that the Administrator of Veterans Affairs is authorized, under such rules Sand regulations as he may prescribe, to recognize agents and attorneys in the preparation, presentation and prosecution of claims under statutes administered by the Veterans Administration. Personal affairs officers at all AAF installations are prepared to render assistance in proper execution of such claims, he asserted. CHAMPION WHEAT CONTEST Thj champion wheat growers of Utah will be chosen from samples of their giain submitted to the Agronomy department of the Utah State Agricultural college, Logan and will receive the annual Philip Pillsbury award. It is hoped samples of grain will be submitted by farmers in many of the principal wheat producng areas throughout the s?te and that a entry will be received, A. F. Extension Bracken, Agronomist, Utah State Agricultural college said. To be eligible for the state award all samples consisting of one peck of wheat, must be sent in not later than March 1. Last years state winner was P. I Mr. and Mrs. Rulon Wiright en-- ! tertained the Progressive Home Makers at their home on Wednes- day night. The evening was spent in planning the program for the coming years activities and in el- -: ect ng new officers. The club meets once a month and is sponsored by the Extension Scirv- ice of the L'SAC. Indicative of its popularity, more than 37I,OOq club girls participated in this competition during the war years of 1942-4Roundly $17,000 worth of awards were donated by Montgomery Ward for the winners during that period. The annual awards comprise sil- ver medals to the county winners, an trip to the National 4-Club Congress in Chicago next December to the state champion, and $200 college scholarships to the six highest rating participants in the nation. Winner in Utah last year was Irene Warnick, Pleasant Grove. The program this year is conducted by the Utah State Agricultural College Extension Service and the U. S. Department of Agriculture cooperating. MAUGHANS A son was born at the Cache Valley hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Grant L. Maughan. Elwood has been n the service since August, 1940, having spent three years in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. During the last few months he has had charge of a radio station in Tennessee. Elwood says Cache Valley is the most beautiful valley he has seen. After a short furlough he will leave for Texas to report for overseas duty. k OLD FOLKS ENTERTAINED The old folks of Hyrum were (royally entertained at the first ward on Friday afternoon and evening. All married people of the ward, bishoprics of the three wards and also committes of all wards as well as the older people ware invited. Melvin Lilenquist, a member of the First ward, conducted the program as follows: Organ prelude by Mrs. J. W. Wright, Congregational singing of America conducted by Ray Jensen. Praycar by James J. Wilson, speech of welcome, chairman John W. Jorgensen, vocal duet Mr. and Mrs. Poerre Sorensen, Remarks by Bishop Wright, Humorous j reading by James Moss, vocal duet by John Jorgensen and Virginia Jorgensen. All musical numbers were accompnned by Mrs. J. W. Wright. Everyone then assembled to the dining room where a bounteous dinner was served to all. Following dinner an Old Fashioned Revival Hour was held under the direction of Mrs. Violet Clawson. Those taking art were: Melvin Merrill Baxter, Hilary Olsen. Fred Miller, John Allred, Roll-an- d Allred, Elton Olsen, Melinda Liljenquist, Norma Baxter, Otey Benson Melva Brown and Violet Clawson. Leo C. Nielsen of the stake Ole Folks committee spoke. Little Shirley Miller sang solos accompaniec by Mrs. Miler and the male quartet furiished two numbers. Pres ident D. M. Bickmore gave the benediction. At 8 p. m. all were again invited to partake of the ward's hospitality. Ladies Trios were given by Mrs. Margene Hall Johnson of Logan, Rosella Nielsen and Afton Allen. Male quartet by Hilary Olsen, Pierre Sorenson, Ray Jensen and Merrill Baxter. Mrs. Lois Patterson presented a dancing review of several talented young girls. Accordion duets were gien by Roy Petersen and Garnel Larsen. A bounteous lunch was served Land the remainder of the evening spent in dancing. A good time was enjoyed by all and the committee should be commended for this entortainment. The Old Folks committee is John W. Jorgensen, chairman Melin Liljenquist, Floyd Bailey, John B.
