they leave their camp tor for the heart of the city in a geographical sense but they went straight into the hearts and arms of the city from a sentimental ti point of view and the impression they left with those who remain behind will grow deeper and deeper until the day shall come when the city will welcome back the victorious sons BOOS of the mountains who have gone to uphold the honor of uncle sam and protect and defend the beloved stars and stripes of grand old glory at an early hour every man in the camp was astir and methodically but with reaping enthusiasm doing his part in preparation for the move towards the din of battle tents were lifted and folded packed away with the other absolutely necessary camp equipment which had been left unpacked and blankets rolled to be used when next they may be required to protect the bodies of af our own brave volunteers at 11 the boys marched to the train of tare cars furnished by the salt lake city railroad company and boarded them in perfect order under the guidance of captain dick young as his friends love to call him and who was thoroughly equal to the occasion as he will prove to be in whatever emergency erner gency he may find himself the ride to town was uneventful except for the encouraging cheers cheera of the few people along the route who had remained at home the boys were all as jolly as could be and while they know the people of the city lying in beautiful repose below them were about to show them some appreciation they little dreamed of the overwhelming wh elming demonstration that EL awaited waited them when the boys ome come face to face with the enemy they will remember the loving cheering and patriotic acclaims of the mother the sister the father and the brother at home and fight fight to secure to them forever and to all mankind ere long the god given boon of liberty they will strike 0 how hard for the freedom of brother humanity downtrodden in another land and those at home will pray as only mothers can pray for the dear hearts on the field of battle and glory A few minutes after alighting from the cars at the corner of state and second south streets the volunteers formed and took their places in the marching column the parade was formed as follows platoon of police felds band of 24 men G A R veterans captain young and staff battery A utah volunteers captain grant and staff battery B utah volunteers hospital corps Christen sens band of 12 men signal corps captain lund and staff company A N G U 30 men company B N G LT 30 men company D N G U 30 men university battalion L D S college class all hallows band of 16 pieces citizens flag brigade school children with flags salvation army there was an enormous crush at the corner of state and second south streets and the volunteers egere great ly hampered by hand shakings shadings of friends who forced their way into the ranks in spite of the orders of the officers and the batons of the police many a little trinket was tucked away by the soldier boys at this corner friends fearing this would be the last av 4 opportunity they would have to press into the hands of the departing on onet es something toy bir which they could remember them when far away from home up state street went the column to 1 the music of hall columbia COlum bla and 1 through the endless sea of humanity that packed the line of march from there continuously to the rio grande western depot the march continued to the corner ot of first p h st south thence west to east temple thence north to the pioneer M monument on thence south to second south and thence the nce straight west to the rall rail road depot the scenes all along the route were of so a nature that the hearts of the volunteers could not but be swelled filth pride old glory was here there and everywhere waved by bi adil hands bands and fluttered by the sott sort velvety chubby fingers of wee mites of humanity who found thedr way into the crush beautiful girls and women mingled their shouts with those of gallant men and patr lads and the grand aggregation combined to make one mighty shout to heaven in encouragement of the boys who left them today old men too feeble to raise their voices scarcely above a whisper shook in their trem bling hands bands the colors ob ab dear to them wille while the tears of grandman grand maa gave the boys a god bless blesa you that was worth much to behold mayor phelan of san francisco has issued the following proclamation to the citizens of san Fr fraacisco Frai alcisco cisco during this week more than troops from the western states will arrive in san francisco on their way to the seat of war these brave men are offering their services and perhaps their lives to their country in its hour of need and it is incumbent upon all citizens to manifest their hospitality and patriotism to in order to show their appreciation of the self sacrifice and loyalty of the volunteers the red cross league has made arrangements range renge ments to serve the troops at the ferry landing acting with the manufacturers rs and producers association I 1 kave have arranged to have a band of music escort the troops as they arrive from the ferry out market golden gate avenue and van ness avenue to washington street on the way to the presidio Pre 1 I now call upon all citizens everywhere but especially along the line of march to display the flag and to keep it displayed at least until all our troops depart for the front and to take such other action as may serve to cheer and comfort the men who are responding ILO to their count rys call more than twenty five thousand people assembled at the rio grande western depot to give the volunteers their fond greetings every point of vantage was occupied by a dense throng eagerly watching all that was going on the boys in blue were scattered throughout the depot grounds returning with a will the hard bard grips of muscular hands and tenderly press in ing the softer hands of dearer hearts during the whole time between the arrival of the troops and the crowd at the depot and the departure of the train there could be heard the college and school yells of at the boys the music of the bands and the cheers of the girls and small boys look where he might nothing but a sea ot at humanity hum antty and waving flags greeted ones eyes all were good natured in the of the crowds and no accident happened here go some boxes of oranges over to the cars care for the boys and there go the coffee sandwiches doughnuts etc for the luncheon lune heon all provided by the tender hands prompted by loving hearts of patriotic ladles ladies after the luncheon was met and de fluted fet eted and the boys had shaken the hands of some friend for the fifth or sixth time since the arrival at the depot the boys settled down in their seats eats and then with a cheer that amounted to a great roar the train pulled out for ogden there thare wore were nine roaches coaches and all were decorated with hundt hundreds eds of small flags the tha engine was a powerful specimen of the freight family so far as could be seen under the cloud of bunting and flags with which it was adorned A iia ting shot boomed out from a cannon in the yards as the big agine picked up her load ft a burden dear to every american heart in utah man while waiting for the departure of the train bearing the utah boys in Ig bitae kiLe there were many incidents which aich took on it A tone of sadness ranging all the way from sorrow to grief from bravely concealed anguish to 60 pious adut t tears AU all of the boys had thou 9 andis of friends many relatives and there here were at least a few whose relations to the departing volunteers were litell till more tender groups were to be found everywhere in which one or ore of the boys were surrounded by jore e fair sex in quest of autographs rich were generally written on the ladles handkerchiefs on which the signatures axe are to be worked in silk all kinds of mementoes and tokens were exchanged and in many cases the troops had not a button left on their sleeves one incident suggestive of the state of feeling and there were probably many such was this goodbye good bye ed said a lady friend of one of the boys 1 I hope you will come back safely of course he will corne come back said another he will come in a short time so will all of them another voice broke in if sampson could only get near enough to that spanish fleet in the west indies to throw salt on its tail they would be back inside of three months but so long as things are going on as now heaven only knows when they will return 11 now and then there would be a movement of the gaily decorated engine which is to take the train to ogden and supposing the time had come mothers would embrace their sons and sisters their brothers while tears fell thick and fast the relief it if a postponement of such a culmination can be so called which followed brightened the I 1 situation 1 somewhat but of course not f for or long many fathers and brothers bade their khidir parting ones goodbye good bye and came away so as to be spared the last trying ordeal it is however but fair to say that trojans within the walls of troy never behaved better than the boys themselves and the feeling otherwise was by no means one of yc regret but the natural one of sorrow borro at parting darting too much credit cannot be given the patriotic ladles ot of salt lake city for their almost superhuman and most successful efforts to bring about this mornings big demonstration the change in the time of departure of the two batteries batt erlee disturbed all their plans of yesterday for a general demonstration tomorrow but the plucky ladles ladies met the emergency and were about town early this morning the different committees committe ees doing an enormous amount of had work in a very short time there were the train decoration to look after the luncheon at the depot to see to ate disposition to toe be made of at the host of school children and the numerous mu nerous bands to be notified but it was all done as only the ladies could have done it their patriotic hearts seemed to enjoy the arduous task imposed upon them and not an emergency arose but it was met successfully f it had been planned to have a meeting at 10 this morning but the change of tisae bitne in departure made the meeting impossible but the several committees acted as if inspired by the one thought of making this mornings |
