house beginning evening nov fifth at p m and closing cm an monday evening eveni nig november 14 the opening services were very well attended as were all of them and a good interest shown throughout the entire coon conference ference one of the special features of the conference was the singing about twenty elders were present including elders louis A kelsch keisch and jos F cardon president and secre secretary dary respectively of the northern states mission ion the use ue of the court house was gill granted anted to us free of charge as heretofore for which we are bo those in ch charge and know the lord will bless them inasmuch as they did it unto some of the least of these theae my brethren they have done it unto me the services service 9 throughout were presided over aver by elder george E barton the choir composed compo eed of the elders eldert s fund a number of saints furnished the music elder george E barton made ft a few ina remarks and called ddn on elder elde r wm R that exists now against the church of jesus christ will be the destruction st of the fhe people in this day the bitter work of enemies is the cause for this prejudice and this opposition to is being in the missionary field I 1 do rejoice in this work as do all the elders when we are doing our full f ull duty a servants of the lord since the apostles visited the several conferences there has corne come a great change over the people in regards to the gospel and the elders are doing a noble work where they could do but very little before I 1 have been laboring in marlboro county with elder peterson pe terson of fillmore since the let of september and will say that the lord was with us and blessed our labors and through the influence of his spirit many are investigating the gospel As the counties along or near the coast are very sickly in the summer we are moved to what we call the up pr per counties in the summer and back bac k to the lower counties in the winter marlboro counties is one of the healthy counties and as the elders have been laboring her all summer elder pe terson and I 1 were able to finish the county before going below elder george A day then concluded that thal it brotherton indians who came from tiie nie state of new york to wisconsin in an aa early day and settle ld on the west side of the lake on pox river but afterwards moved over to the west side where the government gave them an allotment of W deew of land to each family in I 1 1839 IX their adopted the civilized mode ot of into b by building houses on their farms gall and it living ft in them and fairly well one of theold the said evits eliha that hue has been handed down to them is the excessive use of tobacco the women as well as the men smoke very freely but we notice in their tempie temperance rance hall that they have organized a juvenile temperance club which pro i hibits among other things the use 0 of tobacco in any form these people have been in the habit of attending church tor for a great many years but since our elders have been among them they have attended oui meetings the cause for their leaving their old minister was because he allow ewd himself to do as a great many ministers have done he spoke very fully of the mormon elders and as the congregation differed from him in heir views on that subject about one half of oc the audience arose and left the church and have not yet returned to hear him the rest of his flock forsook him at the close of that days service and they say they have no further use for him they are pleased to have us visit among them and hold meetings and they invite us to their homes and entertain us the branch here in fond du lac is in a good thriving condition most of the elders in this conference are now in their winter fields
