Show THE OS OF UTAH 4 UM OF THE A aai fiata tor for soli chorus and organ expressly dipre i asly for and dedicated to my odear dear friend evan steph eris and his famous tab erna cle choir BY JOSEPH PARRY doctor of music Uni south wales november 7 1898 the albore inscription Iti appears on the of an 18 19 page e follo folio of closely written bausic received by prof evan Step stephens stepheni it a few days dayi gago ago from dr joeeph parry the eminent musical who made such a I 1 am M ahir our musicians muoi clans and the people of utah at the recent eisteddfod the poem now set to music was written by prof stephens and won the first prize at the eisteddfod of 1895 it was the intention of the Cai cambrian brlan association soo lation to have it set to music thuell and sung at pioneer celebrations the outline of the work Is partly taken from whitneys Whit history of utah it opens with the scriV scriptural tural verse which led the prophet joseph smith to seek for light if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of god who to all men liberally and not the music is written for a boy alto as is also a beautiful solo prayer 0 0 lord hear my cry the music representing the powers of darkness assailing the boy prophet while engaged in log the throne of grace is intensely dramatic and the words of god to joseph most effective the message of the angel moroni a recital recitative live for tenor voice showing the records upon plates of gold and the chorus in brief brings br inicis the first part to a close the whole serving as an introduction to bo the main theme the P pilgrimage of dhe pione pioneers ers this opens with a short baritone solo entitled the prophet to the words word come my people let leit us journey to she mountain m of our god answered hy by a male chorus re tat at first then the ladles chorus similarly respond when the beautiful march theme Is sounded by the tenors and taken up by each voice in chorus chirue the march Is interrupted later by the baritone barl bone solo again calling to prayer width the words word come let us cali call upon the lord dord the wilderness lies before us this is followed wed by the mus lc of a prayer the words of which is not yet filled in this and most of the remaining text is to be filled in by mr stephen at aft dr parrys request the music of this prayer is wonderfully descriptive the calm melodious flow of the appealing voices are blended the dobbings sob bings of women and children interwoven 4 in n the ment TOi ent at the close of this movement the march is again resumed shortly to be interrupted by the trance entrance en to the va awley illey a brief and startling interlude for chorus trumpets with triumphal effects leads to the final hymn of Pr praise alse in majest majestic tic but joyous movement the ithe words to be supplied bythe by the recipient the whole work is classic in its seriousness rand and beauty director stephens Is more del lighted with this mark of esteem for ham self and his choir than he was to tio have won even the prize at the recent eisteddfod As hoori soon as practicable the work adil be published I and mastered by t the he choir it is hoped that the masterly composer will be here in peram to conduct a performance for mance of it dairing the co coni mang ling summer director stephens has for some soine time past been in tion with california fOr nifa oregon montana tana idaho and colorado Col lorado musical organizations in hopes of banding together to induce the doctor to ito bring a few eminent welsh artists over and give us a series of conr concerts ts from his own works and oratorios it is yet too early to announce the results the people will no doubt be too glad to show their appreciation of dr parry r and his services for music whenever he may visit utah |
