Show YOUNG MENS conference A conference of the young mens mutual improvement associations of the salt lake stake was held in the tabernacle sunday the morning session was devoted to reports of officers and remarks by stake superintendent R R lyman and in the afternoon the services were of an interesting character the program of exercises being of such diversity as to greatly please all who were in attendance stake superintendent lyman presided the choir sang the hymn come dearest lord descend and dwell by faith and love in every breast was offered by elder george S mcallister McAll rater the choir further sang behold the great redeemer die A broken law to satisfy the general and stake authorities authorities of the young mens mutual improvement associations were then presented addressed the congregation the mutual improvement work said he was a great factor in preparing the young men of zion for the ministry in the nations of the earth time was when no such opportunities were afforded in ila art caration pa ration for such a labor as no such institutions as the improvement associations were in existence but things different now the lord had moved upon his servants to organize such institutions tor for the benefit of the rising generation and they were gradually advancing and reaching a plane of perfection werely they were found a source of great benefit w to the young men and women og 0 these mountain vales the speaker re berred to the methods in vogue in the mutual improvement associations and said that they such as to instill within the minds of the young people a love of god and a love of the gospel aai awi a restored in these latter days being so there was no excuse for non tion as every opportunity was given prospective missionaries to prepare themselves for future duties and re elder eilder clawson urged the young men to greater diligence in a re 6 search of the scriptures that they might pave the way for careers caream of usefulness and devote a portion lorT of theair lives at least to a dissemination of the principles of the truth and ottS ness the utahn quartet rendered another selection after which elder george M cannon made a few remarks referring refer rift particularly to the great help to church government the mutual improvement pro associations were the speaker knew that tha t they had had a beneficial effect in the section in which he resided and believed that such waa the case in other districts he deprecated the fact that so eo many of the young men of our church were users of tobacco and otherwise violated thee the commandment known as the word of wisdom elder cannon canaan felt that music was a factor for great good in the assemblies sem blies of the saints and he thought J that song should be given every attesi tion in the mutual improvement associations 21 ciati ons r elder W W beckstead was the next speaker he testified stifled te of the power of 0 prayer and spoke of the great good being done by the mutual improvement a associations he felt that the servants of the lord had been beem im inspired in being led to org organize anlize such associations as aa to his mind these were of an ennobling character and important auxiliaries in the rolling on an of tho the church and kingdom of god elder george H wallace next spoke 3 stinging said saad he should be cultivated lia in the young men and should be made a feature of every mutual improvement j association the preparation of the les sons gone was also essential as aa without with lout at 1 l to the subjects assigned the meetings could not be made interesting and therefore would not mot accomplish the ends de desired olred returned arles said the speaker should make a special effort to attend the mutual improvement meetings as
