W LLIAM C YOUNG maryland conference bath city maryland june 29 1898 the steps that have been taken under the auspices of elder H T robertson of the maryland conference in rolling and advancing the cause of truth in its utmost rapidity h has as been highly appreciated by all the elders under his control he having spent twenty six months of hard labor in the eastern states mission was released to return home on the of june 1898 the elders feel the loss of him as he was a man well thought of and had the spirit of his mission and worked diligently for the salvation of souls but the elders rejoice in having elder M M decker succeed him as he is taking a delightful course for the advancement of the maryland conference six elders were called to labor in this city citi by the president during the winter months on account of the inclemency of the weather and the disadvantages they met with in the country knowing that health Is a great blessing to an elder who desires to fill an honorable mission we were warned by our leader what evils we would be surrounded with while laboring in the city and to abstain ats an arid shun everything that has the appearance of evil he also stated if we would be prayerful and humble before god he would guide and direct us where we would be able to do the most good by so doing escape all snares that might be strewed in our path by our enemies after a few days work in the city the news spread like fire upon a desert that six mor mons were in town the reporters flocked to the hotel for information in regard to our business what we intended to do etc and for foe six weeks the most interesting features of t the he news was waa in town mormons cormons in town doubtless you are all aware that ahat six mormon elders are in town they carried on as though we had horns as many people bl bt elleve nevertheless we continued on in the work wo rk knowing at the same time all that might be said would result in good As time rolled by the papers became stele state for or want of pews until the war broke out and then everything was waa warl war war warl war everything seemed to be very encouraging although we met with a great deal of opposition in many ways many people were very prejudiced towards us some would shut their doors in our face providing I 1 did not hold my toot foot in the door way till I 1 bore my testimony to them others would throw up their hands and begin to back off saying we dont want a anything ny thing to do with you go away in fact we axe are always spectacles in the eyes of the people but ar are e willing to be ridiculed and scoffed at in many of the gospel at ways way s for the sake last the wom ens home missionary society thought it necessary ry to take mormonism in hand appealing to the people of balte through the different the walls at papers as watchmen upon zion tor for whose warning cry our veople people listen in every time of danger dangerio to aid us in arousing public sentiment against the evil in our land referring to mormonism lest the daughters of the people be carried away captives and their blood be required at our hands etc amidst all this clamor appears rev W R campbell of salt lake city representing himself as a presbyterian minister but one would woud take him to be e a farmer right from jhb country the fhe society warned him and also insisted upon him to lecture upon mormonism which he d did I 1 d at th the e boundary avenue presbyterian church and distributed tracts headed why christians cannot fellowship the mormon church but it only had a tendency to cause the deop people ae to scrutinize the tenets of our faith and resulted in good the elders are all well at present their names are as follows M M decker T 0 hanks nathan thomas C A hardy william A williams and myself the news is a welcome visitor and is highly appreciated by all who read it SAMUEL D BROWN prom the holy land in a private letter to elder rulon S wells elder philip S maycock who Is I 1 laboring in the turkish mission writes as follows no doubt brother lund has given you a complete report of how matters stand in this mission however we find the interest perhaps I 1 should say excitement regarding mormonism rapidly increasing in this city during our absence while the saints were holding services stones were hurled through the windows on four occasions and twice since we have returned the same s ILM e action has been repeated yet I 1 am inclined to think that such occurrences are not altogether disadvantageous disadvantage olis people who otherwise never biever would have heard of a mormon thus have their curiosity arous aroused edt and want to know what strange doctrine occasions such a flurry indeed our meeting room cannot hold all who want to eny ter and we are now seeking a larger place of course if the stone throwing becomes serious we shall ha have ve to appeal for protection but so long as ll 11 if keeps within limits it is rather a go good 0 advertisement for us there are several young men who will be baptized in a few days I 1 hear bear also from that on the coming f fast t day a number will be received into the church there brothers hintze and nishan arrived here last monday and next monday they and I 1 shall go to ta aint ab wh where ere e 1 shall hereafter labor brother larsen will remain in aleppo such IL disposition of us seemed best to brothers bro there lund limit and hintz the mission has a pr promising lull line outlook 4 the visit of t the brethren an wo has inspired the saints to new endee endea ws ors and they now feel eel f they are really a part of the great brotherhood before they felt that they had been somewhat neglected brother brother larsen and 1 I too rejoice that we have been so much assisted by the labors of the brethren and we feel a renewed desire to forge ahead in carrying the banner of truth it appears from reports that the missions everywhere are progressing rapidly such news Is gladdening to us your labors of course increase but I 1 am sure the extra burden is willingly borne millennial star alone but bat faithful honey grove fannin co texas july 1 1898 I 1 was baptized and fannin county in a few months I 1 had to part with all the saints who 11 lived ved herg here and was left alone as a lit were in the midst ot mob mo b and although I 1 have tried with all my might to live my religion that my life might be a good example for others to follow striving to allay the prejudice existing here against the truth I 1 have not succeeded to any great extent and yet I 1 feel that I 1 have been able to accomplish a good work I 1 can see that the lord had a groat great purpose tn in desiring me to remain here and I 1 feel as though deliverance Is nigh through my earmest prayers and those of the saints at lane hunt county I 1 had the privilege of attending the conference at pate fate rockwall county the last of april and the lot of may and of seeing my two oldest
