present of the council of apostles Apo atles elder brigham young of the stake presidency elders P A hammond and wm halls after the opening exercises on saturday ed alt 10 a m elder P A hammond gave a very favorable fayo rable report of the condition of the stake elder H M taylor spoke of the saints as being a practical people believing in a literal application of the principles and ordinances of the gospel elder C E walton spoke of the necessity of receiving spiritual food elder geo F burnham said the effects of our conference gatherings were that we receive strength to enable us to withstand evil elder brigham young toung delivered an address on the operations of the spirit of god upon the minds of the youth 2 9 p m bishop george halls gave a favorable report of the mancos ward elder P V A hammond spoke of the lack of faith among many of our young men and how bow much is in being done for them by the authorities of the church elder eldar C B E walton reported the ll satisfactory 10 of and progress d moab wards as making alsopp jens nielson of bluff gave a good report of his ward bishop james ashcroft also reported the burnham Burn hama ward as an being in a good condition the general and local authorities beret unanimously sustained by the vote vot of the saints mer litber 0 C burnham spoke of the fruits of faith in the gospel of the son of god elder brigham young expressed himself as being pleased with the bishops shops reports those among us who do not merit the title of saint will be deprived of it observing the word of wisdom he said is not a sacrifice ac the lord gave us that Nv revelation elation in order that we may know how to prolong our lives god will prosper us it we live as ite he requires us to pm A meeting of the priesthood was held elder F P A hammond spoke of the necessity of uniting and establishing home industries he instructed ted the high councilors councillors Counci lors in their duties they should be exemplary in their lives and should sustain the stake presidency and local officers and lead out in all good works elder william halls spoke of the priesthood as being a gift from god elder brigham young counseled the brethren to settle down and cease moving from place to place and cultivate the soil in the best possible manner and avail ourselves of the many advantages within our reach to build ourselves up sunday at 9 am sunday school met in regular session short addresses on the importance of sunday schools were made by elder brigham young and stake officers at 10 am conference reconvened reports of the sunday schools and M I 1 were given showing an increase in these departments elder wm halls spoke of the importance of the gospel as an educator to acquaint us with our heavenly father elder john R young spoke of our lack of faith by falling failing to carry out counsel given us in our temporal matters operation cooperation co seems to be lost sight might of by many of vs us bishop jens neilson and elder hammond followed in the same strain and showed the benefits to accrue by cooperation 2 p m elder young occupied the time upon the consistency of the organization of the church the beautiful TAYLOR aset stake clerk wayne stake the wayne stake quarterly conference was held at loa wayne county utah on saturday and sunday march 28 and 29 1898 there were present of the council of apostles elder george teasdale the stake presidency all of the bishops a good representation of high coun cifors and patriarch F P W young elder W E robison Rob laon president of the stake presided on sunday the bishops reported the several wards w do in the stake and reported that the saints were generally devoted to their religion the worshipping shipping wor and fast meetings are well attended the people remember to pay their tithes and offerings no strife existed and unity and good will characterized their labors elders W E robinson and H M hansen addressed the saints exhorting them to diligence and good works commending them tor for past faithfulness and expressing their joy and satisfaction in the labor to which they had been called elder john H peterson gave a report of the M 1 I A work in which he demonstrated that a good wot work k had been baen accomplished during the past winter and much credit was due those who had unceasingly labored in the good cause elder joseph Eick eckersley ersley reported that the he sunday schools were in a thriving state and bore testimony to the divine mission of joseph smith and the restoration of the everlasting gospel elder george teasdale Teas dole occupied a portion of the time at each meeting discoursing upon the first principles of the gospel pre existence of spirits and the glories of the terrestrial and celestial at the close of the afternoon meeting a priesthood meeting was held abc which a great many questions upon points or of doctrine were asked by the bir brethren ethren and satisfactorily answered by elder george teasdale sunday patriarch F P W young gave a report of his labors related his experiences perien ces of twenty pioneer work in fremont valley he very much regretted that owing to ill health he was compelled to seek geek a new home he spoke in endearing terms of his associations with the saints of wayne stake and inspired by the spirit of his calling pronounced the blessing of god upon the assembled congregation and uttered words of prophetic comfort and encourager encouragement nent to the saints residing in the valley elder gearien S bastian reminded the saints that they were engaged tn in a temporal as well as spiritual work our mission to is to build up the waste places of zion and make beautiful thim land ladd for the coming of messiah not forgetting to perform cur spiritual duties which will lead us to communion with the holy spirit i elder seth tatt taft reported ae the religion classes as having done a good work during the past winter and spoke at some length upon the necessity and purport of the work elder george teasdale addressed the saints at some length at each meeting the topics treated by him were the philosophy of the doetz doctrines ines of christ the Ini importance of paying tithes and the sanctity of the marriage covenant the necessity for young people to shun the very appearance of evil and the glory glor of a pure and virtuous life the awful faith of the transgressor and covenant breaker and the glorious resurrection and exaltation of the pure n heart were beautifully portrayed tr yd by the speaker elder W E robison made the closing remarks of coffen conference nee in which he tendered thanks to ell all who had assisted to make the conference a success the meetings were all well attended many unable to procure seats the weather was lovely sunday and monday may and 1898 1801 president C 0 card and counselor sterling williams of the presidency of the stake were present counselors john A woolf was sick there were also present patriarch H L hinman the presidency of the high priests quorum a majority of the high council bishops of wards and counselors representatives of the various organ Izat ions and a good representation ot of the saints from all parts of the stake sunday 1030 1080 after the opening exercises elder H S allen alien spoke of the beneficial results of the organization of religion classes throughout the stake after altet which sister zino Y card led a claw class of about thirty children through aa exercise showing the mode of con ducting the religion classes one particular feature being the repeating in chorus of the blessing on the emblems used in the lords supper elders C 0 card S williams and H L hinman occupied the time left in the forenoon session the spirit of their remarks being the necessity of parents laboring diligently to make correct impressions upon the minds of their children and encouraging those who were laboring assiduously with the youth to this end in the afternoon president card spoke of the influx of emigration in our midst and gave pointed instructions to intending settlers in regard to locating so that all who desired to live the lives of latter day saints could keep in line with their co ion lets The Bishops then gave in reports from their different wards showing an increase in numbers and a continuance of diligence generally speaking among the saints the different organ being as complete as could be expected under the circumstances especially ally the sunday schools and the mutual improvement associations and a good work being done by them a hearty welcome was given to those newly arrived in the country and assistance si proffered where it was needed to those who had not located elder thomas duce from utah then addressed the conference referring to the experience the saints were called to pass through and spoke of the fulfillment of prophecy in regard t 0 the saints possessing the land and the elements being tempered in their behalf and exhorted all to diligence and to an appreciation of the blessings poured out upon us as a people in comparison with many of the inhabitants of the earth who were suffering from war famine earthquakes and the destroying ying elements as had been predicted invoking a continuance of the blessings of heaven upon the people in the evening the high priests seventies and elders quork quorums ins and also the T y M M 1 I A and primary maxy associations were reported by the different representatives showing a laudable interest in the work required of those organizations after which elders J P low J P jordan and j T evans addressed the saints upon the practical duties of everyday every day life especially the care and education of our children monday may 23 in the forenoon the relief societies Y L M 1 L A and sunday schools were re reported potted showing 9 quite an increase in numbers and I a lively interest in the work elder H i L hinman then delivered an im impressive discourse on the obligations resting UP upon on the saints in keeping the commandments of the lord elder S williams followed exhorting the saints to live by every word that cometh from the lord through his servants and by so doing escape the desolating scourges urges about to be poured out upon the nations of the earth I 1 in the afternoon the labors of it the he home missionaries were reported after which president card read a report from our missionaries laboring in manitoba showing the condition of the work in that part of the land he then laid before the saints a few of the labors before us in this region necessary for the welfare of the cause and the benefit of the people exhorting all to be diligent in keeping the commandments of the lord the weather being fine the congregations were unusually large
