PACIFIC general agent H M clay of the union pacific sent president smith the lowing following tol dear sir beg to advise you that thai I 1 am just in receipt of the following telegram from mr lomax general passenger and ticket agent of the union pacific at omaha in the sentiment of which I 1 earnestly join kindly convey lo 10 to the officials of the mormon church and the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy in their loss of president wilford woodruff with respectful tender of any services we can render presidents death and burial many years ago president brigham young observing the tendency of the people towards expensive funerals and strongly deprecating such a custom requested the members of the twelve apostles to state in writing to him how they would like to have their own bodies laid away most of the apostles did so and their letters axe are still on file some time subsequent president in a signed but undated document u wrote this regarding himself concerning my death and bullai burbal I 1 wish to say that at my death I 1 wish the historian of the church to publish a brief account of my life labors and travels as aa an elder and an apostle in the church of jesus christ of latter day saints I 1 wish my body washed clean and clothed in clean white linen ace according to the order of the fhe holy priesthood and put into a plain decent coffin made of native wood with plenty of room I 1 do not wish any black made use of about my coffin or about the vehicle that conveys my body to the grave I 1 do not wish my family or friends to wear aej any badge of mourning for me at my funeral or afterwards ter wards for if I 1 am true and faithful unto death there will be no necessity for anyone to mourn for me I 1 have no directions to give concerning the services of my funeral any further than it would be pleasing to me for as many of the presidency and twelve apostles who may be present to speak as may be thought wisdom their speech will be to the living if the laws and customs of the spirit world will permit I 1 should wish to attend my funeral myself but I 1 shall be governed by the counsel I 1 receive in the spirit world I 1 wish a plain marble slab put the council of the twelve apostles A remarkable career wilford woodruff fourth president of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints was born bom march 1 1807 in farmington now called avon hartford county conn he was the son of aphea and buelah thompson woodruff most moist of his bis ancestors were possessed of strong constitutions and lived to a good old age they were among the earliest settlers in that region until he was twenty years of age he assisted his father who was a miller in april 1827 he took charge of a flouring floering flou ring mill himself and continued in that business until the spring of 1832 10 when he went to richland oswego county new york purchased a farm and saw mill and settled in business at that place his mind was exercised on religious subjects at an early age but he did not become connected with any religious denomination because their doctrines and practices were note not as he viewed them in consonance with those of the church established by christ and his apostles he prayed earnestly that if god had a true church on the earth he might become acquainted quain ted with it on december 29 1833 he and his brother azmon heard elders zera and elijah chaeny preach the gospel as proclaimed by joseph smith they also read the book of mormon being convinced of its truth he was baptized two days afterwards by elder zera and confirmed the se same evening he was ordained a teacher teather in the church january 2 1834 on the alth of april he started with a team for kirtland ohio where he arrived on the and met joseph smith with whom he made his home tor for a week and heard headd many di discourses discourse scours fram the elders of the church he started on the list of may as a member of zions camp 4 and traveled with that body to missouri he remained in clay county until the winter on a sunday evening he went into the woods alone and prayed bogod to god that lie he might preach the gospel to the inhabitants of the should be ordained and go on a mission he replied 1 I am ready november ath he was ordained a priest and on january 13 1835 he started without purse or scrip on toot foot for arkansas tennessee and kentucky in ift company with elder harry brown they walked through swa swamps amps and lor for ests where they were in danger from wild beasts aud and passed through jadeson county where they were ind in from mobs their first appo opportunity to preach to a congregation was on january at the house of ot mr nath nathan an tanner in green county missouri on arriving in arkansas they were ve V and his feet as though struck by lightning this was on february 14 1835 1885 he made his way to little rock reek part of the journey in a canoe which he and his companion made from a cottonwood tree with which they rode down the arkansas river miles they waded through mud and water miles on foot mr woodruff was left by his companion alone in a swam while hile traveling from little rock arkansas to memphis tennessee he continued his journey preaching bv bytho way and on april ath in the W middle RI cr of tennessee he met with elder war waif ren parrish with whom he labored la in the ministry over three months thor they baptized forty persons on the nth or of june wilford woodruff was ordained an elder by warren lie he et ex tended his labors into kentucky Kin tucky and baptized thirty one persons after elder parish had left for kirtland during the year 1835 he traveled altogether miles held meetings baptized 43 persons and abd organized three branches of the church in the fall of 1836 he returned to ohio and spent the winter in kirtland in may 1837 he left kirtland on a mission to the pox fox islands visiting on the way his bis relatives in connecticut to whom he preached some of whom he baptized he landed on north fox island august 20 and aad by the month of october two branches of the church were organized there he subsequently introduced the gospel in the city of Ra bangor ngor maine edaine visited boston provi providence and new york then went to Fa connecticut where he baptized his father stepmother step mother sister and other relatives and organized a branch of the church he then returned to fox island at north vinal leaven on august ath 1838 he received word that he had been chosen by revelation to fill a vacancy in the council I 1 of the twelve apostles and that he waa RS to go to far west missouri and prepare to take a mission to england he organized a company of the saints to emigrate to the headquarters of the church and started october ath to lead a company of 53 souls who traveled nearly three months in wagons through rain mud snow an frost while crossing the green mountains elder woodruff was attacked with a severe illness and brought to the point of death but was healed by the power ox god through faith in the following ring he went to par far west to fulfill toe e commandment and on april 26 1889 I 1 on the spot designated he and elder george A smith were ordained members of the council of the twelve apostles he started august fth on his mission to england although then suffering severely from chills and fever he arrived in liverpool january 11 1840 and labored successfully in staffordshire ford shire being prompted by the spirit to go southward he went to the bofty of worcester in that neighborhood was a body of earnest 66 rnest religious people called the vomited brethren the members as deim bled for religious bous worship in chapla and other places and had forty five pt preachers eachers among them they believed to posterity the journal has been continued in his own hand writing up to the present date it is a marvel of patience perseverance and diligence in addition to his other othea duties president woodruff was active for a great many years in the affairs of the deseret agricultural and manufacturing society of which he was the president for twenty one years he was a member of the legislative assembly of utah twenty in the council and one in the house in the fall of 1875 he was appointed historian and general recorder of the church which position he occupied until april 1889 when the temple at st george in southern utah was dedicated by brigham young in the spring of 1877 wilford woodruff was appointed president of that temple and there he performed an extraordinary work on behalf
