grant school building shortly before noon t today oday that it was not so to is due to two causes the first and most important of which was the splendid discipline exhibited in emptying the building of pupils after the discovery of the fire and the second was the slow progress the blaze made before the arrival of the fire department after the alarm had been sent in the fire broke out on the north side of the roof near the smoke stack and was caused by soot which had fallen from the chimney and become ignited by a spark the blaze was first seen by a boy who was going down the street he immediately notified principal martin and the engineer the former with all possible dispatch communicated ted with each teacher and commanded a dismissal of all the pupils who at a given signal left the building in regulation fire drill style in less than two minutes every pupil was in the street without realizing what had occasioned their hasty dismissal in the meantime the engineer was making for the nearest fire alarm box three blocks away reaching there he sounded the alarm and returned to the school some considerable time elapsed before the arrival of the firemen owing to the great distance to be traversed once on the scene they promptly proceeded to the work of extinguishing the flames which had by this time eaten aate a hole in the roof about thirty feet I 1 square considering the tact fact that the roof is constructed entirely of wood it seems little less than marvet marvel ous that it was not wholly consumed the fireproof fire proof paint however hart hai much to do with the slow progress or of the blaze As the flames shot in air and as the firemen ascended the roof hundred of anxious parents gat gathered berea round fearing for the safety of their little ones not knowing that they had all been safely marched out when they beainy were ere assured that none were left jeff behind and that there had not been single accident their joy knew a X no bounds and all joined in express expressions iolas ot praise for the admirable presence ot of mind and thorough system that ob bained in getting the pupils out of b harms arms way when the excitement was over the children who still stood in platoons in the street were dismissed for the da dav and an inspection of the school begun begu inspector of buildings pinney cha chaar man of the buildings committee the ath dinst in which you submit several questions and suggest a theory in relation thereto permit me to say that your theory seems to be in accordance with the conclusion reached by this office when you were in the city some days ago As to the question whether the board of equalization of a county has authority to abate taxes of indigent persons I 1 beg to say that this question has arisen in other counties but not until after some abatements had been made under the mistaken notion that they had the power to do so I 1 have suggested to the state auditor that perhaps it might be well not to exact of counties the states portion of such abatements for the year 1897 but that he should issue notices to all of the counties that for the year 1898 and thereafter no such abatements would be permitted to be made as in my judgment they are unconstitutional and void FROM MONDAYS DAILY JANUARY 24 stephen B newman owner of the 11 76 saloon died at his home yesterday after an illness of nearly
