| Show JUAB STAKE conference the quarterly conference of 0 the juab stake convened at nephi at 10 0 c lock 15 1898 january a m aar after the usual opening exercises including prayer by elder george teasdale elder james W congratulated the saints on having congregated and said he felt that the spirit of the lord was with us he announce announced ld that president george Q cannon WO would uld honor us with his presence during the conference and felt that we were highly favored in many respects exhorted the saints to be meek and humble and bore a strong testimony to the truth of the gospel he urged upon the people the necessity of attending to their temporal duties and paying their tithes and offerings and spoke of the good work bing being done b by y the Y M and Y L M 1 associations and by the relief soe cities elder eder charles sperry in addition to endorsing the remarks of president explained the duties and privileges of the seventies and elders Qu he spoke of the precarious condition of many of the nations of world and of the calamities th that at are daily befalling the people and explained how this was in accordance with the predictions made by ancient and modern prophets elder isaac H grace made brief remarks expressing his desire to continue to work for the furtherance of the gospel president george Q cannon ex dressed creased his bis pleasure at meeting with the saints he spoke of the influence of df the holy spirit upon us and what a great blessing it is to us he explained that satan was a spirit of great power dower in the councils of heaven and that he advanced a plan ian of salvation which when it was rejected caused rebel and he exercised the him to newer that he had in inducing others to follow him and succeeded in leading third of the hosts of heaven away one thereof he and his and nd that by reason were cast ot or of heaven and followers Wl lost their first estate he compared the course of the evil one with that of many perso persons ns who become possessed with a desire to thwart and destroy the alan of salvation and on that account sneak evil about those things they knew tobe of god once in the afternoon the bishops of the various wards made their reports porta re which showed matters to be in a very satisfactory iry condition president george Q cannon again addressed the people he referred to the opportunities of doing missionary work at home borne and related how some bonne yonne elders in one of the wards had visited among ther non mormon residents in 11 their vicinity and awakened a considerable interest among them in the principles of the gospel which had resulted in some being baptized he spoke of the disposition being manifested among some of the wealthier classes in the southern states to receive and entertain missionaries and investigate our doctrines and said tallar reports were being received from all parts of the world the lord Is in opening up lip them the way so 80 that all who A are desirous will have an opportunity of hearing the gospel elder ge george orge teasdale made the closing remarks on an sunday morning elder sudbury made the opening re remarks marks after which ahe general and stake authorities were presented by elder george teasdale and on motion were unanimously sustained elder teasdale said that on inquiry he had found that there were some children over eight years of age who had not been baptized he said there should not be he explained the necessity of having this ordinance attended to and spoke also on the necessity of teaching the children the benefits of the word of wisdom president george Q cannon followed also speaking on the word of wisdom in the afternoon sacrament was administered by elders william H and john A booth after which president george Q cannon again addressed the saints he read from the book of mormon the instructions given by christ to his disciples on the western continent he also spoke on the law of tithing and the great blessings tabe to be derived from observing it elder james W said he was grateful for the privilege we have had of having president george Q cannon in our midst during the conference the choir sang an anthem and benediction was pronounced by elder james W I 1 the conference was adjourned for three months A priesthood meeting was held saturday evening which haq was addressed by president george Q cannon elder teasdale and elder sudbury T G WINN clerk |
