OCR Text SONS OF UTAH HONORED two promotions have lately been made in the army which will occasion universal gratification in utah the advancement of captain richard W young to the rank of major combined with his assignment to the command of the battalion of artillery recruited in utah for the philippines is an honor to this state as well as a signal distinction conferred upon the young officer himself the commander of this battalion will carry a grave responsibility especially in case of an engagement calling into action but every man in the battalion personally knows major young toung and nearly all of them are old acquaintances of his while many 0 of f them fia beave e been his intimate friends without an exception every one of them has unbounded confidence in him his bravery and ability and aside from military discipline his wish or word would be law to all of them while captain youngs promotion has not been formally cons consummated consummate ummat ed he has been placed in charge of the battalion and the issuance of his commission as major is only a matter of of official routine the distinction conferred upon col willard young to la even a greater honor to his native than alethe are the marks ni favor his nephew ephew n has received on resigning from his count rys service some years ago he held the rank of captain but on his re enlistment tor for the spanish war helas he was made a major this promotion has been closely followed by another of much greater importance por th that at of colonel of a regiment of engineers a position of honor and responsibility almost if not quite equa equal I 1 to that of a brigadier geln general etal of in fentry while ahne it its is true that politics too often influences appointments and promotions in the army amy absolutely no such an ele eleto tofit ent operated in tha he cases of mor and ae colonel young their e a army And their well ell AIM sarn A wera W 0 abet orn e afifa wata aa to cotee we aebi I 1 very first opportunity to add to the reputation they have already achieved by their bravery and ability whon when in active service time lis is a great dispenser of justice and he is making fair promises to the effect that through these two sons of utah honor shall be reflected upon the chief founder of UM the state who until after he was dead was so egregiously misunderstood by his countrymen but whose works and worth are now beginning to be comprehended ended by the civili civilized sed world onel willard young is the son som and major richard W young la Is the grandson gra adson of brigham young
