| Show YOUNG FOLKS conference the young mens and young ladles ladies mutual improvement conference came to an end sunday night 3 interesting sessions having been held in the tabernacle yesterday the morning session opened at 10 elder H J orant grant presiding after singing by the choir prayer was offered by elder B H roberts the choir sang a 9 second selection after which elder grant referred briefly to the progress of mutual improvement work during the year it had he said been successful beyond the most sanguine expectations president joseph F smith also spoke on the great good accomplished by the mutual improvement associations and that which they would yet be able to do A pleasing quartet selection was rendered by james T dunbar john james thomas butler and heber sharp reports of the juarez washington oneida and kanab stakes were made respectively by elder D E harris miss mary norris morris and miss meda nelson the choir then sang and the benediction was pronounced by sis I 1 ter maxie marie Y dougall AFTERNOON SESSION the choir sang the hymn 0 god thou great thou good thou wise 15 eternal la Is thy name prayer was offered by elder F M cannon the choir and congregation sang america elder thomas Hull general secretary and treasurer of the Y M M I 1 A read the statistical Bt and financial reports of the Y L and Y M M I 1 A the same showing there to be young ladies associations and young mens the former with an enrollment of the latter with increase in young ladles ladies during the past year 1814 1314 young mens average attendance of young ladies council of apostles addressed the conference his remarks were replete with gratification to the lord for the health and strength which he enjoyed on the first years anniversary of the day upon which he underwent a very dangerous surgical operation elder grant was also gratified at being connected with the improvement associations he noted with much satisfaction the gratifying increase in the enrollment i and felt that great good was being accomplished among the young people these institutions said elder grant were calculated to make of the young men and women of zion noble fathers and mothers the parents of dutiful and obedient children it was the duty of all to be patriotic to the mutual improvement pro they might roll on successfully and be indeed valuable and indispensable adjuncts of the church of jesus christ elder grant spoke of the success attending the publication of the mutual improvement era and in behalf of the general board heartily thanked all who had contributed to its support president wilford allford woodruff next spoke his remarks dealt with the great blessings of the lord towards his people and the work which was waa expected of them in years to come he felt to rejoice in the progress that wali being made by the mutual improvement associations and by all the organizations of the church and was was thankful to know that the lord was working among the young people and that they were fast coming to a realization of the duties and obligations devolving upon them and the great mission it was their duty to perform president woodruff referred to his boyhood days and the desire of his heart at that time to not only hear the gospel but to have the privilege of proclaim ings it and of mingling with prophets and apostles he was thankful he had had the privilege of seeing these things and of rearing children childre iw who had followed in their father footsteps and his desire was that arje sons and daughters of zion would follow in the footsteps of their mothers and help roll on the catov and kingdom of god the church ha haa been established by the father au ans would remain and grow and flourish until the purposes of god had been accomplished complis hed sister maria Y dougall was the next speaker sister dougall also referred to the mission devolving upon humanity and especially upon the children ot of the latter day saints she dwelt upon ulion the necessity of the saints honorat honoring and sustaining the priesthood of god and the living oracles upon the earth and felt that the lord was richly blessing rio his people in permitting such a noble and god fearing man as president woodruff to stand at their head and ana dellver deliver unto them his word the mutual improvement associations were progressing and would continue to roll fan and do their part in up UD the church and kingdom of god elder B H roberts roberta addressed the conference he referred to the enrollment ent of the mutual improvement as a sedat ions and the recent increase therein and felt that further work fa in the same direction would add greatly to the already splendid statistical showing read at this conference there waa waa better spirit said the speaker religiously and morally amona amock the rising generation than g a few years ago tha th people of god were honorific honori fig and reveling the priesthood to a much greater extent than formerly and progress in all proper directions was being made more so than had been the case cage th its years agone in order tc maintain the present standard of excellence in the mutual improvement associations said saia the speaker it was necessary that parents exercise due dell gence in the training of their sons and daughters the objects of mutual improvement were first firs t the conversion to the truth of the youth of zion and second the preparation and equipment of the young elders in israel for the promulgation of gospel principles and the carrying of the holy priesthood it was intended that the mutual improvement associations should fit and prepare the tha young people of zion for future responsibilities ties and for the great work that would devolve upon them in converting the nations of the earth to the gospel of jesus christ and prepare them for a life of spiritual purity and righteous mess iness the choir sang the anthem glory to the lord our deliverer Dene benediction diction was pronounced by elder john henry smith EVENING SESSION the choir sang sang the anthem 0 god our help in ages past our hope for years to come prayer was offered by elder A 0 woodruff the choir further sang glory to god on high let heaven and earth reply sister leah dunford addressed the congregation it being the first time the speaker had occupied the position she ahe expressed her timidity at arising to fill her part of the program but knew that the spirit of the lord was available when required and properly asked for and therefore desired the sympathy and faith and prayers of those assembled the speaker related her experience in visiting the slums of new york city where poverty and misery were glaring to overcome such a condition of affairs it was necessary that institutions of learning be established among the people such institutions had been established in the earth arth first in Eng larid and then in the larger cities of america the same being known as settlements in these settlements much good had been accomplished in taking in the poor forsaken urt urchins bins of the slums of larger cities but withal there was something lacking the time came when they reached a stopping place and could go no further this lack said the speaker was supplied in the church of jesus christ where organizations for the training of the young had been established and where there was no limit to the knowledge to be acquired directing her remarks to the young women sister dunford showed to them the necessity of attending mutual improvement here said the speaker the young ladles ladies could thoroughly themselves with the gospel of jesus christ could learn theology in all its branches and know for a surety that the work in which they were engaged was truly the work of the lord the subject abject of home management was referred to by the se as a very necessary study in the young ladies mutual improvement associations the young women should acquaint themselves with the household and all its branches they were the makers of happy nappy homes and should see to it that everything was waa done that could be done to make their surroundings and those of their husbands happy and Wee agreeable able this work attended to properly would rob it of its seeming drudgery and make the home bea beautiful uti attractive and a fit palce tor for the boye bars to away their leisure hours concluding miss dunford made an earnest appeal to the young women to attend to their meetings study the mutual improvement guide and make the world better happier and more attractive trao tive with their presence miss elsie barrows then rendered a beautiful dutiful autI ful vocal selection elder george H brimhall responded to the call tor for a lecture on counsel dT taking aking tor for his text john the first chap ter and first verse elder brimhall spoke poke of the gods co toge together concerning the image and likeness of man to arrive at the unity possessed by god the father and his son jesus christ it ww was necessary that coer co erslon sion larm form a part of ones makeup make up the same by command and this leading to counsel the oneness of the th gods was accomplished in this wise the unity of thought word and de deed ed necessary for the accomplishment of great gat purposes was brought about in this cr is way daniel webster counselled
