house yesterday in honor of the aged residents of the ward and widows the guests number and through the energetic eneree tic efforts of the committe in charge of the affair aided by the good people of the ward the day was most pleasantly spent by all who were fortunate enough to be present the house was beautifully decorated for the occasion with flowers bunting and pictures among the latter being an oil painting by samuel jepperson of the old provo fort as it appeared nearly fifty years ago when the pioneers first settled on provo river west of the present site of the city Jep persons band furnished music and a nice program of recitations and music was rendered during the day A fine dinner was partaken partaker par taken of and numerous speeches were made all expressive of gratitude to the father who has blessed the land and the people and of love and kindness to one another among the visitors were bishop preston and elder george goddard of salt lake elders partridge and smoot of the stake presidency sister mary john and counselors of the stake presidency of relief societies bishop and counselors elders junes E daniels and john E booth abw L E eggertsen the oldest person present was elder edson barney 93 years of age who claims to be the oldest living member of the church in point of membership there were three pe persons rs ons over 80 years of age viz brother and morning at east second south street where she took up UD her residence immediately after her marriage mrs schilling was waa a bride of less than a month and her death is a terrible blow to her hue bua band family and frie friends lidi of whom she had a host the deceased first became renown to the public in october 1896 when she was made the unfortunate victim of a persistent and objectionable suitor in the person of one will edson who almost everywhere in season and out insisted in forcing his attentions upon her on the night of october 8 edson waylaid miss ott and W L mccabe a gentleman friend who was accompanying her home this occurred between thirty fourth and thirty fifth streets on washington avenue edson was inflamed with all the pangs of hla his jealous disposition and taking up a position behind an electric light pole awaited the coming of the pair on whose lives he seemed to have deliberate designs As the young couple approached pro ached he stepped from his hiding place and opened fire three shots took effect in miss otts body two of the bullets never having been removed from her person on account of the difficulty and the extreme danger attendant upon operations of that character one of the leaden missiles entered the center of the breast and lodged in the region of the right lung another pierced the groin and imbedded bedded im itself in the pelvic cavity these two were always a source of trouble to miss ott even after she was able to leave her bod bed and resume her duties dutie 8 in the h household ouse and it is from the effects produced by them that she to is said to have met her death after having contended bra bravely veLly against such a fate tor for more knore than sixteen months the exact cause of death is given by the doctors as aa peritonitis this trouble being the direct result of the wounds she received at the hands of edson on january of the present year miss ott married mr frank W schilling formerly of st paul but now an employed of the oregon short line the th match the family says was a partle parties happy one approved of toy by all concerned for the past faur weeks mr and mrs schilling resided on second south street and never for moment suspected the shadow of death was so close upon them A day or two ago the young brides condition became alarming and despite the best beet efforts of physicians she grew worse dr D fisher to the bereaved who were very numerous were administered by the various speakers the lovin levin disposition and pure life of sister was testified to she suffered greatly during her sickness but in all was patient and kind and never complained pla ined elder william 13 preston pronounced the benediction and the dedicatory prayer was offered by elder joseph warburton the pall bearers were herman F F thorup john T thorup hyrum E thorup and joseph Th thorup orui all brothers of the deceased and george E and willam S romney out of the seven hundred and twenty pioneers registered last summer in the annals of the 1847 rs about a dozen of the oldest of those survivors have passe passed d away since then the funeral services over the latest of these in this city sister lurena wife of the late john was held in the twenty first ward meeting house during the present week the deceased had reached within a fraction of four score of years with a record reaching back into early wifehood and motherhood in abe early when the young couple were residents of the state of indiana and keeping open house for the early elders going out without purse or scrip then coming to utah among the pioneers enduring all the trials and vicissitudes of travel and colonization with the heart of heroes and the faith of |
