| Show LATTER DAY SAINTS COLLEGE the tabernacle was crowded almost to its full capacity last night sunday nov 14 the occasion being the eleventh anniversary of the founding of the latter day saints college A delightful program was rendered among the selections were organ solo john J mcclellan vocal solo della delia daynes trio sweet love divine lizzie thomas edwards john robinson and thos ashworth baritone solo oh god have mercy john robin ko binson contralto solo ethel pike and a soprano solo by liz lizzie ale thomas edwards the address of welcome was given by elder C W penrose he traced briefly the history of the college from the founding of the institution to the I 1 present school year and then expressed I 1 the view largely held by the latter I 1 day saints that everyone needs a spiritual education in order to comprehend more fully the truth of all science philosophy and religion the anniversary oration was delivered by elder B H roberts this large meeting he began 1 is s a 0 sufficient u ff c I 1 ent refutation of the slander which has hap gone abroad that the mormon church is antagonistic to education the statement has recently been renewed in some quarters that the church is in opposition to educational systems particularly ticul arly to higher education As an a refutation of this elder roberts traced the history of education in the church from its founding t ti the present time in kirtland and nauvoo schools were established whereby the children of mormon parentage could be educated in the arts classics and sciences as well as in the principles of christianity the utterances of brigham young and the still earlier statements by the prophet joseph smith were quoted president youngs advice was that the saints should accumulate knowledge from all sources and he further counseled the establishment of good schools throughout all utah the prophet joseph smith taught that men cannot be saved in ignorance and that man is ir no faster than he gets knowledge the understanding of truth which we obtain in this world is perpetuated in the next it is strange in vie view w of these teach ings the speaker said that the mor 3 won mon people are maligned for an al lebed opposition to education and that the statement is still abroad that mormonism can only thrive where ignorance abounds the leaders of the church have always fostered dional institutions and the history or oc the saints prove this the speaker pointed out that the saints adhere truism the fear of god is the beginning of wisdom they beli believe Lve that the education of the spirit is more important than the education of the intellect our own ef forts have been and are now in that way if intellectual education is to be gained to the detriment of righteousness and the truth of the latter day work the people prefer a neglect of that intellectual training skepticism is the crowning evil of the age said the speaker and he was ji in favor of stemming the tide in every possible way infidelity is fed by the falsehoods which creep into our secular schools today a man who would questions the babb lings ot science is looked upon as an hoderic he ho detic yet theodes axe are far from froin being infallible the supposed wildurn of our age is shown to be folly by the ohp next it is only a short time ago comparatively the speaker said when men believed in the geocentric theory that the earth is the center of alf universe and about abou it the sun moon and stars re volve revolve but this ams ida is now discarded men are not safe in believing that all error has been pushed out of the theories that now abound god has revealed to the saints the he true record of mans origin and identity denever mens theories coin in contrast with the truth of god they must go to the wall we as sainty sainter should make a distinction between the truths men have have discover discovered eI and 41 the theories they advance D do 0 not make the mistake of combating 1 truth of god by the partial knowledge men have attained we expect mormonism to go hand in hand with education it is on our education ahat our 4 hope rests we expect the latter day saints to prove that the revelation of god broadens the minds of men and ancl will advance them to an ideal gentay moral and physical education prof pro f willard done of the Col college callej lej presided over the meeting on the N were the board of regents and the faculty A particularly y interesting feature of the meeting was a presentation of flowers to the faculty by little irene done who was dressed very prettily in the coll college e ge c colors olo re last nights meeting was the largest of its kind ever held in tha state fully six thousand people W were ere in attendance all exercises at the college were adjourned today monday and this even ing the sti students will hold an info informal reception in the school building |
