| Show GEORGE M PULLMAN chicago oct 19 george M pullman died suddenly this morning of heart disease in his magnificent brownstone home corner of prairie avenue and street he retired last evening at the usual hour which was somewhat early he was apparently hi ordinary health and there was no indication of his demise or indeed any py premonition even of his ill nessa while seemingly in good health Mr pullman had been complaining during the last three or four days of the hot spell and of feeling rather uncomfortable for table after leaving his office at 5 0 p so yesterday he remained at his residence all evening about he woke awoke a and called his body servant to his bedside and spoke of again feeling uncomfortable finally he requested that the family physician dr billings be sent for in the meantime hearing through the servants of mr pullmans indisposition rev dr charles eton of new york an intimate of the pullman famil family yand and who was visiting at their home went hurriedly into the sick mans bedchamber mr pullman rapidly grew worse and a second message was sent to dr billings but before the doctor could reach the home mr pullman had become unconscious and he did not rally mrs Pullman who was in new york was immediately telegraphed and is now on her way to chicago she is expected to arrive in chicago tomorrow morning on the pennsylvania limited she has been spending the season at the pullman summer residence at elberon N J but went to new york city a few days ago preparatory to coming west for the winter mr pullman while in apparently good health recently formerly had some stomach trouble which he attributed tri buted largely to the condition of hia alis leves eves his belief was that about all the bodily ills were due to the eyes during the early part of last week he gave the visiting officials of the pennsylvania syl sylvania vanig railroad a dinner at the chicago club and was in excellent spirits the following statement of the circumstances cum curn stances aur surrounding rounding pullmans death was vaa prepared for the associated press by mr john S outlands Rut lands chief counsel of the pullman company mr pullman died at 6 this s morning of angina pectoris pec toris the ex rual heat eat last week together with perhaps P more mom than his hie usual exertion in showing some friends about pullman had caused him a feeling of debility about which he spoke to one of two friends but which he did not ii regard as serious he told one of them yesterday who gug suggested that he was not looking quite as well as usual that he had been unable to sleep satisfactorily the last two nights and particularly sunday night that he had some difficulty in breathing but that he felt much better then and he felt that a day or two would put him all right t he felt so well he intended leaving for new york thursday evening death came to him quickly about 5 this morning some friends who were staying at his house heard a noise in his room as if he wanted to call some one they went to his room and faund him standing up as if he were in great pain one of them telephoned for dr billings at the same time he was assisted to walk to a lounge he then became unconscious meantime dr billings arrived at the house and applied restoratives restora tives but without avail and mr pullman quietly passed away without regaining consciousness ness mrs pullman is being waited on her sad home coming by sanger W pullman the younger son geo W pullman jr is in the city together with a daughter mrs frank 0 louden the other daughter mrs carrollan Is in san Franci francisco scot and was at once summoned to return to chicago funeral arrangements will be withheld until the members of the family at present in the city may confer with the absent ones at the town of pullman preparations were made to close the big shops and for the proper observance of mr pullmans obsequies |
