| Show FAIR nampa nama idaho oct 18 16 the most successful effort ever made by the ida ho people P in the fhe wa way y of a fair it Is VOW nw closing i at their capital boise city alty about a half mile out from the bustness busti basti ness 8 center at Y the race track tr liew aw buildings have been erected anscom iodious quarters made outside the vegetable and fruit display the chit children s work from schools and ladies fancy work the races seem to be tile the chief attraction prom five to seven thousand people thronged thron ged the ir rounds and you may understand that a small malt city like boise must have had her er hands full in trying to entertain so bo many hungry and tired people pe cople but she did it and everybody seemed well satisfied among the sports were the various horse and other races trotting running etc but the most interesting an and d the one giving the best beat satisfaction was the cowboy race five entries were made but only three came in each rider had four horses saddled with which to ride twenty miles this feet was accomplished by the he winner in 48 minutes and only ended as darkness cameon came on of course there was not time enough nor ample rewards possibly to bring out a good display of domestic stock outside the race course a few hereford c cattle at tl e were about all on the grounds the po poultry u itry show was very creditable the kennel showed some splendid dogs a 96 few fat hogs were in the pen and aad a few sheep were seen in the general exhibition building were the artists work the school childrens display and natures product from the orchard and the field and minerals from the mountains there is no department in the fair more sor SOK ageous more beautiful and of greater great br interest to the writer than the frades display I 1 have witnessed many cho choice displays of fruit as I 1 passed through web weber er c county 0 anty not long ai since I 1 nee I 1 taft I 1 never saw the equal of the great ua beautiful fruit of all kinds as seea 0 WL the grocery stands and on I 1 witnessed the splendid display atrero vo in the utah county wi lair blit aa badly as I 1 dislike to glye gly eup up we must concede to idaho the largest and to in some varieties the best 6 fruit jt it to te with the more hardy varieties of bt fruit as it is with the health of people to in the rural districts the new country in these mountains under irrigation produce the largest V purest west and best beat flavored apples I 1 presume in the world idaho excels in apples peara and prunes in the vegetable I 1 display grains and alfalfa take the I 1 lead this line judging both from the stalk and alid kernel cannot be beat corn com and squash and the more delicate varieties of vegetables were not so god corn stalk and cob are scrubby before passing the fruit display di let rne me say something about cured fruits though but a small display and but bat little being done of it we may safely say idaho can equal anything in ar country at least in cured prunes 1 never saw a finer variety also asplen did apples peaches pears and plums and a large variety of bottled fruits and jellies idaho people like those of our state exert but little interest in patronizing their own for this reason I 1 presume as well as lack of capital Qa PItal but little is done dond in the curing of these valuable fruits while the ground Is ii covered with for prunes in some of the forty acre patches the stores in boise an and other dother cities near by are buying and selling imported cured fruits the kindergarten work drawing penmanship composition and other specimens of school work showed splendid advancement in the educational department fancy work by the ladies was one of surpassing beauty while the art department depart nent showed some very good work among the most interesting and important displays of the fair is that of ores and minerals for idaho is a mining state the various selections of rocks and dirt are so diversified as to give a very good idea of the mineral product of the state there are ores from boise basin salmon river country gold belt of the wood river the seven devils the rocky bar and from florida mountains equal in importance are the copper ores from seven devils high grade gold ore from the elk city district and the rich gold rock and marbled marble from cassia county the general petit pine grove and rocky bar mines have furnished their quota of gold ore specimens A sample of gold quartz comes from the ada hay near baker city specimens osgold of gold silver rock from the big I 1 mine in owyhee owahee county that assays essays ounces silver to the ton and 6 10 gold there Is ore from the black hornet district 2400 pounds milled over seven ounces of gold bullion the trade dollar mining company has on exhibition county rock white rock porphyry blue granite concentrates tailings amalgam and a gold and silver bar of 1200 ounces fine also some specimens of gold sil ver rock in the native and sulphide state that assay to the ton there are several pieces weighing about each idaho is a consumer not a producer except of course in mineral products southern idaho becomes a splendid marl market ket tor for utah products while the west and north buy from oregon and washington the idaho intermountain fair was remarkable for its absence of home manufactured articles to get a glimpse of her agricultural products you must attend a fair for unfortunately the oregon short line raffi railroad oad runs through the most barren portion except as it nears the western borders idaho to is only a baby as an yet as regards her agricultural cultural resources millions of acres of as good land as we have lave in the west and accessible to water Is yet untouched by the homemaker judging from the splendid showing made at the fair there is no lack of climate or any other feature to make idaho one of the greatest states in the union not only in production but in people ANDREW
