Show Commentary Schweitzer’s legacy still revered still relevant Albert Schweitzer was one of the world's great men But he was as the Manchester Guardian said of Mahatma Gandhi when he died “more than a great man He was a good man" Schweitzer had an almost childlike tenderness which one reads out of his books and which people felt in his presence Here are three paragraphs from one of his books He is writing about the hospital in Lambarene in French Equatorial Africa which he founded in 1913 and where he lived as a medical missionary for 52 years until his death in 1965 at age 90 “When some poor moaning creature is brought to me with an inflamed appendix or strangulated hernia I lay my hand on his forehead and say ‘Don’t be afraid In an hour's time you will be put to sleep and when ‘And all ye are brethren’" It is a touching scene: the you awake you won’t feel any more pain’ “When the operation is fin- ished I watch for the sick man’s awakening Scarcely has he recovered consciousness when he stares about him and exclaims again and again ‘I’ve no more pain’ His hand feels for mine and will not let it go “The African sun is shining through the coffee bushes into the dark shed as we black and white sit side by side in the room and feel that we experience the meaning of the w ords humble genius who gave up successful careers in theology and music to study medicine so that he could help relieve the bitter pain and want of the needy world around him — sharing the late afternoon sun and shadows with his black brothers in a primitive hospital shelter on the burning equator in Africa Schweitzer’s legacy to the world is still revered and still relevant In August an international conference on “The Relevance of Albert Schweitzer at the Dawn of the 21st Century" was held at the United Nations in New York It focused on Schweitzer’s guiding principle “reverence for life" a philosophy that speaks to our modern concerns for arms reduction and the nuclear threat medicine and health care ethics and human rights and ecology and the environment Schweitzer was born in Germany in 1875 By the time he was 31 he had earned doctoral degrees in theology philosophy and music and had published his monumental work “The Quest of the Historical Jesus” a book which has dominated much of this century’s scholarship on the person of Jesus He was also a Lutheran pastor and an accomplished organist and an authority on Bach Here Schweitzer drew a line in his life As a youth and young man he found himself asking why he should live such a happy and comfortable life in a world where there was so much naked need He determined that he would spend his first 30 years in self-cultu- and then put the re knowledge and skills he had mastered to the use of a suffer ing world One day by chance he picked up a pamphlet ling on a table telling of the deprivations being experienced by the people in Equatorial Africa In that moment he found what was to be his life work He forsook his academic career to become a physician One thinks of Schweitzer himself when reading what is his d sentence about Jesus: “He speaks to us the same word (he spoke to his disciples): ‘Follow thou me!’And to those who obey whether they be wise or simple he will reveal himself in the toils the conflicts the sufferings which they shall pass through in his fellowship and as an ineffable mystery they shall learn in their own experience who he is" diseas- e-infested per-"ha- ps most-quote- Jewish leaders laud Missionaries From Page 2 Elder Jason E Westenskow son of Glora B Westenskow of Ogden and Evan G condemning that country for killing Palestinians during an Arab riot In a column in the archdiocesan newspaper O'Connor said it was “too coincidental" that the condemnation came under “pressure to maintain the solidarity of nations against Iraq” He said nobody would profit by “creation of scapegoats” In “a day when too many of Israel’s friends seem to be turning their backs on her" he wrote “I am proud to call myself her friend as I am proud to call many in the Arab world Lorenzo Songbook Value Pack Vol 1 & 2 Plus Audio Cassette FREE The Life of Christ 54 per package 1295 Biblical Scripture
