| Show EASTERN STATES MISSION so 50 CONCORD SZ st brooklyn now new york march 2nd and 1897 IF it may interest your readers to hear gam L i n from the eastern states mission te we have received a vait recently from elders ciders roberts and midgley known throng throughout about the eat eart as an the mormon evangelists they have been through kansas city st louis cincinnati pittsburg philadelphia and now lastly new york for two sunday evenings they have held forth at the hardman hall fifth avenue besides attending and taking part in our regular services at brooklyn an audience ot of about three hundred came to each ot of the new york services and paid respectful attention deett wa was s presided over by elder S W W richards president resident of the mission and elder roberts roberts discoursed upon the relation 0 Mormonism to christianity the meet ing in g was noticed and commented upon fa favorably by seven of the leading dailies and that alone has accomplished an incalculable amount of good in in awak ening interest in the great work of the liast last days and removing some of the prejudice which exists generally towards it it it is conservative to say that tens of thousands read the account of that meeting elder richards was not well enough to preside asahe at the second meeting elder robertas subject was the gospel of christ from a mormon standpoint this meeting was also alluded to by some of the papers paper but the opposing in alence was already at work and several anti mormon articles appeared in connection with our reports which neutralized some of the gabd results expected A pleasant feature of the services was the singing which on the first evening was rendered by elder in solo form and on the second occasion by a quartette uart ette in which brother willard 2 squires quires kindly took part these two meetings are all of the kind that can be held for the present in new york the indications are that a good work could be performed in our great metropolis if elder bider roberts or some other able expounder ot of the truth lectured in some public hall ball for a succession of nights as was tried in st louis there our evangelists stayed for a whole month holding meetings every evening and twice on sunday bearing testimony of the gospel gosp ea to thousands upon thousands elder roberts is now en route for his mountain home elder midgley midgle is is a at t chicago and elder george D is with us at brooklyn awaiting instructions regarding the continuance of his mission so well begun our services at brooklyn continue to be interesting and well attended last sunday we had quite a gathering of salt lakers including nephi W clayton claton and wife and james saville of Z C M 1 I elder richards spoke lor for about an hour in his usual instructive and fatherly way we also had present with us six elders arrived for this mission among the late changes in the mission is the fol following lowin elder J H wilcox is just gone to philadelphia philadelphia and soon will be joined by elder C A streeper elder roberts was favorably impressed with the quaker city during daring his visit there and thinks the people worthy of special attention there are some old members ot of the church residing there and several others were baptized curing the above visit the work around scranton is being pushed steadily and several baptisms have been reported recently elders welch and kinsman are about to go into massachusetts where ma many ny distant relatives of the latter are lo 10 located elder richards is nearing the close of his ministry in this part and has been released to return home when his bis successor in the presidency of the aas eastern tern states mission elder A alonzo onzo kesler arrives which probably will be the middle of this month we will miss him and sister richards very much and some of us will feel like orphans for fok a time at least D J WATTS |
