large attendances atten atLen danoe dancea a feature which be was waa pleased to note cote he stated that the occasion was waa an exceedingly interesting one the tenth anniversary of the Latt erday saints 1 college was of great importance in the history of the institution he felt that the lord had impressed upon the winds minds of his servants the necessity of doing something of a very thorough nature in relation to education the promoters promoter of church schools he felt did not realize at th time of commencing the work the great importance which would attach to it in later years yeara the organization of church sunday schools had done a vast vase amount of good to the people of the state stat Is of utah so aloe alac had the organization of church day schools brought about an excellent state of e flails flairs among the people they not only fitted and prepared the youth of zion to pursuer pursue the various avocations of life but gave them an education which qualified them to go out into the nations of the earth to take tabe part in the ministry outside denominations had bad noted this scholastic train ing and had bad recognized in it one of we best beat reasons why the mormon elders were able to carry on the work of the ministry throughout the length and breadth ot of the earth president PreBi deot cannon called attention to the deep seated desire among the people of his community to become educated he lid did not believe there could be found a locality in which the people were so BO eager to become well versed in the arts and sciences as aa in the valleys of utah they prized education highly and as a rule the young people while atte attending schools went to work with zeal and energy to drink in the instructions given at those schools the speaker referred to the establishment men ot of sectarian schools in our midst commenting briefly on the objects for which they were organized and incidentally dou tally calling attention to the dire results which in some cases had bad followed a strictly temporal training to the utter neglect ot of a spiritual lion particular reference was made to lo a condition of affairs that atone time ime existed among students of the university they bad become imbued with ideas leading to infidelity and bad become very skeptical with regard to the existence of deity the CAUSO cause of this conditions condition was ferreted out by the board of regents and it was waa lound that the trend of thought contained in the textbooks text books irom which the lessons were being pursued was waa such as to lead to infidelity unless some counteracting In fience was wa brought to near bear in the organization of the latter day saints college the promoters had in contemplation the acquiring of a spiritual training as well as a temporal or everyday every day education the human wind naturally craved for training of a spiritual nature and such a training was included in the curriculum of the latter d day by saints college the conditions existing abroad at the present time with regard to chris and a belief in the bible were such a ae to bring about almost a general disbelief in this line scientific men had baa written volumes upon volumes of works which in their trend led directly to a common disbelief in god and his attributes these books were read and reread re read by the growing population of the earth until the very thought of their being a god had almost diminished from their winds minde A theological training was an absolute essentiality for without it the world would retrograde and drift into a most pitiable condition the latter day saints college said the speaker ep eaker had bad grown from small beginnings but the abe students it had turned out were men and women who w uld grace any community its enrollment roll ment was gradually luu iu reas ing but the increase was not nob as a great so as it should be rhe fhe speaker said eaid that the school had bad a membership of a number which should have boon been increased ton len fold ere this time the school had bad not been supported up ported as it should abound have been the mormon people were not acting in a manner antagonistic and in opposition to the public schools of the state by establishing church schools but the he object in their establishment lish ment was to avo the young people a chance to obtain a theological education as well as to become versed in the arts aud ana sciences president cannon paid a tribute to the faculty of the college for their energy and integrity in supporting and upholding the school by remaining with it during times of adverse circumstances they had bad been loyal layal to the cause and blessings would redound to them for their patriotism in referring to scientific beliefs and theories the speaker expressed th elview that there would arise adlae among this people hose who would advance ideas that would explode false scientific theories and put them to naught an education was waa invaluable but unless it be a true sound and thorough education it would avail but little good books from the pens peas of inspired writers were the mediums through which an education should be sought coupled with which should be a desire to know deity and to serve him the young people of zion were recognized wherever they went as being exceptionally bright in the pursuit of an or in any aay other branches in which they might bi ba engaged thee conditions augured well for the future and indications gave promise of a generation rising up which would do ore oreda to any
