Craig Moody prior to debate Party chairmen swap aspersions By CHARLES F TRENTELMAN Standard Examiner staff OGDEN — The chairmen of Utah’s two major political heatedly parties debated Thursday evening whose congressional candidate could do the most for Utah The debate was held at the Marshall White Center and sponsored by the Economic Development Association a consortium of black businessmen It featured Democratic Party Chairman Randy Horiuchi and GOP Chairman Craig Moody answering questions posed by businessmen and educators from the black community Martin Manning director of the Ogden Office of Merrill Lynch asked the two what their respective congressional candidates — Democrat Gunn McKay and Republican Congressman Jim Hansen — would do for Utah’s economy Moody said you had to look no further than the recent threat of furloughs at Hill Air Force Base “I want you to know that Jim Hansen is a worker and he went to work and got that furlough stopped” Moody said “and if you look at the record overall Jim is working doggone hard” Horiuchi his voice rising said he had to disagree “Facts are clearly stubborn things” Horiuchi said and the facts were that back in 1974 when Utah’s congressional delegation was Democrats Utah got back $250 of every $1 in taxes it sent to the federal government in taxes Now he said Utah gets $150 “Our guys back there are not doing their job!” he shouted National defense spending has gone up 49 percent “but only h of that is coming to Utah Our guys are falling asleep at the switch!” He also accused Hansen of letting Utah lose the InterSchool mountain Inter-Tribin Brigham City and said Hill Air Force Base has lost missions it should have gotten one-fift- al Horiuchi said Hansen and Hatch were too busy in Wash- ington supporting President Reagan’s failed Supreme Court nominations to work for Utah Moody of course disagreed The Democrats control congress so “what you’ve just told us is that your own party has shafted the State of Utah” he said Not at all Horiuchi shot back “If we’d have had our own guys in there we could have prevented the pillage” At that point the time allowed for answering that question ran out The next topic was education funding and both agreed it needs to be improved The one other point of disagreement was on the issue of minimum wages “It’s heinous to think that people can live on $335 an hour” said Horiuchi but then admitted his party has taken no firm stand on the question ON o) Ini THE summary of actions taken by local public agencies on Thursday Oct 20 A Ogden Council City - Appointed a
