month developed a small cooling-systeleak and will be replaced for the ship's next flight in February the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said Thursday Layers of nickel and copper from which the engine’s combustion chamber is fabricated were found to have separated in one area said Jerry Berg a spokesman at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama The leak resulted It is too early to tell whether the engine change will affect the flight schedule he said The problem was found during a inspection Wednesday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida The engine will be removed and sent back to the manm post-flig- w ht ufacturer the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International Corp for repair “It’s not possible to tell precisely when it happened” said Berg “Pressure tests were conducted before the flight and indicated the separation was not present” Berg said the leak did not show up on any of the instruments that monitored Discovery’s performance on the first flight since the Challenger accident in January 1986 “It only became apparent once we got into detailed inspec- tion” he said Discovery completed its four-da- y mission without a hitch landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California NASA officials said workers preparing Discovery’s sister ship for a late November flight will inspect an engine component on Atlantis to make sure it was not damaged during testing at the Stennis Space Center in Bay St Louis Miss Officials were uncertain how the developments would effect launch dates for Atlantis scheduled to fly no earlier than Nov one-ho- ur pre-flig- ht 23 The Atlantis inspection was ordered after an engine being tested for use on space shuttle Columbia sustained damage said Conrad Nagel who is in charge of preparations for the second mission “We have no reason to believe we’ve got a problem” Nagel said “but we had a problem on another engine and they’ve asked us to go back and look at it on ours” Space shuttles are propelled inrocket to orbit by two solid-fuboosters that drop off when they are spent and by three engines that are fed supercool liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen from the shuttle’s huge fuel tank 4 'J A -l Misidentified bones costly to Air Force PENSACOLA Fla (AP) — The war ended for Lt Col Thomas Hart III when his was ravaged by enemy fire and crashed into the Laotian forest just before Christmas in 1972 His wife’s fight ended in federal court Thursday when a judge awarded her family $632000 for the severe emotional distress they suffered after the US Air Force misidentified bone fragments as Hart’s remains in 1985 In a decision that attorneys said could set a precedent for other cases involving missing soldiers Senior US District Judge Winston Arnow ruled the Air Force was responsible for the distress to Hart’s family For Anne Hart the money is small compensation however "Money has never been the issue" she said following the decision Mrs Hart’s battle against the military began in 1985 when about 50000 bone fragments and personal objects taken from a Laotian crash site were analyzed by the Air Force and some were identified as Hart’s remains gun-Sh- ip But Mrs Hart had refused to accept the identification which was based on small bone fragments and battled the Air Force to win an independent evaluation The probe found the fragments were insufficient to prove the identities of most of the crash victims “She is pleased this case is going to serve as a precedent for the families of other Southeast Asia war veterans” said her attorney Fran Frick “It will afford them some protection against the same thing happening to them” Reg or $25-$2- 8 3 Reg colors sizes CARDIGANS Choose from great styles and colors pretty ALL ALL 8 Reg $26 Save now on three popular color blocked styles tops
