| Show J WORD FROM KENTUCKY city kentucky webster co I 1 january irth 1897 vody marks the first step in the stair W of human itys progress this year I 1 teft pose ose it is a cold frozen slippery old mountain home atma at my dear ni everit aw it may be where you are here and has been for some sometime time so that we can rest out our and pleasant 9 by the roadside and read and pleasantly in the balmy sunny kaintuck indeed for th 1 of old days it has been so warm that 1 one wished to read he sought the f instead of the sunny side of the L I 1 suppose however that we will morning finding it so j up some one scarcely can endure it though we have been very successful gh ing places and churches to ganeb laa in lately fately on account of finding k atves tt ves to in a pi prejudiced neighborhood also nearly every house havin having sickness fit W measles or some other sickness e done very little preaching and private avate residences but with little tle iti in pi attendance to illustrate the pre be existing in the neighborhood sent while talking befi we weare are at pre present 9 iona baptist deacon having church he acquiesced of ofa a baptist me in the belief that we should be wig to hear all sides and that in in tet council there was safety quoted aros abs but when he learned our bat at I 1 had introduced myself as a utter da day saints and that meant the A W as mormon ormon he instantly charged tl flushed face ace and stated that he was tte fied that we need go no farther as 4 ras was positive our using the church not suit the members thereof biche frankly admitted he knew nothing about our brind aoi and accepted a tract another obber of prejudice we called on affee wilt will baptist reverend divine for LV W and though he took us in in Z T ite he commenced telling of the points of f OW doctrine he be disbelieved we in amed him of his bis mistake then with intense anger he told of one ot of our biba att attempting t to 0 take a mans wife ayin ina a buggy from hereto here to utah the having had a rev revelation elation to do so W bev wp we informed him that it ws wis about tobo miles from texas to utah and that it bould be a crazy bishop that would yalei Wk teke flake such a task in a buggy and dw W r elders never traveled singly sways two and two he calmed im woja t and at night when we called x for our oar grips ift he begged pardons pardon said he was aa jesting J i and asked us for our Attic articles tes of faith and a tract and voice of 0 warning this prejudice is is in in striking contrast with the success we have had ever since my mv absence the first place we preached in in this county the people were so taken up with aur our doctrine that they aked us as back to preach again and still a third time and alter after we had bad preached some eighteen or twenty times they gave us a standing invitation and in fact requested us to come and hold meeting sing and preach to them as often as we conveniently could then the trustees and teacher requested me to give them vocal music training before and ater alter preaching and on saturdays and sundays this ol of course we gladly did because music recreation creation re makes us some of our most dear and bastin lasting 9 friends and is of special advantage to us in that it reaches the cultured class of society that often we would be unable to approach without it on one occasion when we had to postpone our sermon tor for two nights as the regular pastor of the church had his appointment come while we were holding meetings the preacher requested me to make some closing remarks to his sermon on charity his sermon presented a splendid opportunity to preach of the holy ghost and also church organization it was such a fine chance that all through his sermon I 1 could scarcely keep my seat so anxious was I 1 to carry on his sermon into the proper line and also tearing fearing that as it was such an excellent opportunity to preach our doctrine I 1 might lose it as he might not call on me he did call me however and I 1 assure you I 1 had bad the spirit of the occasion as ellder elder miller said and did pour mormonism to his large audience in buckets lull full as it were and what was most peculiar I 1 was fearful at first thinking he would possibly call me to order as I 1 was in reality pr preaching eachin 9 in in i direct opposition to the church discipline he represented but be h kept up a con tinous series of approving remarks during my entire sermon such as right so say I 1 amen etc before leaving he came to us and gave us a hearty goodby good by and god speed in our good work asking us to call and accept his hospitality when we came to his neighborhood in conversing with a member of the congregation gre gation after meeting he said did you notice how the congregation calmed down after you had been preaching a few minutes and how they began to straighten up in their seats and open their ears when when you got warmed up in in your sermon it was one of the best opportunities weve had which in all preb probabilities abilities we would have lost it if it had not have been for the singing class january 3rd ard it is still warm weather windy and threatening rain we have succeeded in getting the use of a fine church since commencing this thip letter we held meeting last night have appointment to preach there today and will probably continue all next week if weather permits this country has all been thoroughly worked about two years ago by elder wells hyde bevan giles and others AARON roylance |
