Show GERMANIA CHIMNEY the new smokestack at atthe the germania works eight miles auth mouth of this abla city to a great affair in the building of 8 chimney in utah it will be by far the biggest stack yet built in the state and in some important respects Is ie biti of entirely new design as compared with there erected here the germania ban im had bad one big chimney la in operation feet high the copper plant to in this thia city bad another feet high but the new germania stack far surpasses either and from base to summit brummit will be feet it is IB being built of all hard bard brick laid to in cement and will take 32 men 45 to 60 days daya to complete the mason work uon hon ellae elias morris morrie of tails city has ha the contract for KB its construction anil and each morning a force of his hii men leave tile the city for germania to engage in their dally daily task on the great brick tower tov which will cost not less leea than 70 and will take half bait a million brick in its ite construction heretofore moot moa of the big stack flaacke here bore have been of solid BI walle wall there in this style it the southwestern oath western part or of town it la Is near nea 80 feet high and while it way may not be said f to be unsafe its cracked condition condit loc to warning that it will not endure end tor for many years so 80 it la Is with the other solid wall chimneys berice beri be ce the reason for making the new stack at walls walla hollow they are built after a design to secure strength and at the same ame time to provide for the expansion and contraction ot of the air as it IS becomes heated or cooled 0 1 t al I 1 I 1 I 1 I 1 r lit J I 1 the tha new germs germane nia stack will be am i pie for all the furnaces now construe ted led there and for more that are to t be added in the near future it will be connected with the foot flue which wb has ha just juet been completed at the works wo at its ita base ton ten feet below the our tuft faroe of the ground the stack la is 84 feet to feet square the foundation lei id 10 foot 1 thick chick As AB a base bale there bas baa been 1 alp three of three inch plank covering toe entire surface of 1 1166 fee feet t on this Is ie laid the brickwork which to la cemented so eo that it Is practically a solid mass of cubic feet for the next 16 teet feet the edifice Is 22 feet square giving the opening for connecting the flue the walls in this part are on the same plan hollow as those in the main stack twenty six feet from the base begins the stack proper the outside being 20 feet square are the opening to io the center is feet square the entire length of the chimney for feet the proper rises the bitter bitters being live five sixteenths of an inch to the loot foot this gradual re reduction luction makes the outside of the chimney 12 test feet square at its top and BI as the inner incer space is 10 feet square and the walls have become solid the top la Is a solid one toot foot wall PLAN OP OF WALLS the plan of the walls shown in the accompanying illustration is as ae the chimney is constructed at the 20 foot square starting point between that and the solid 10 foot foundation below the same name general plan Is ia followed with modifications necessary for the con necking avenues the exterior and interior walls and oros unit log them are shown giving the spaces between the openings the exterior walls walla twelve in all two wo into each corner space sod and one into each side space are to admit cold air and there are similar open openings ingo up on the chimney as indicated in the other illustrations where the hot air escapes escape those these open logo and the hollow walls are the now new feature of construction to in chimneys here the heated or chilled air in the stack has caused the expansion or cou coo traction which has hag shaken and cracked the piles of masonry it is believed that the present plan will do away entirely with this trouble and that the hot hoi air escapes above and the dooline draughts from below will so equalize the temperature aff aar to materially aid in preserving the chimney from injury and that the ibe expansion will be regulated thereby within safe limits the illustration of the chimney shown one half as an it la Is enclosed and throws open the other half for tion of we the interior there the idea ida ot of the hollow walls la Is made clear the apertures aper tures between the outside and inside walls continue feet from the foundation then lor for the last twenty anve teet feet the walls walla are solid as shown in the out when this stack to Is completed as aa it to Is expected to he be near the latter part ot of july the germania works will be better fitted to in this respect than ban any almi ar work in the west the work of construction is being carried on ft with the greatest care special attention being paid so 8 that no faults or flaws flaw hall enter therein be reio when the hard bard brick and cement have become firmly united the whole pile will be almost as aa hard as 08 iron and be eves even better than that metal for withstanding the ravages of time und and the ole elemeul elem euf |
