Show SEPTEMBER 22, 198? Utes shock Wisconsin; Weber wins, Y. loses By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor Wow! What a Layton victory By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Theyll be talking about the Layton over Bonneville victory for years to come, but none will cherish it more than the Layton players and the coaches themselves. They (the players and coaches) say they never stop giving up, while plus of the huge gathering who saw the spectacular Region One opener, thought Bonneville had it wrapped up with just 9:34 when they went ahead Junior Ngai Steverson was one player who never gave up, despite being on the side that was 17 points down. The up and coming defensive end could be seen pounding teammates shoulder pads and yelling, It aint over yet. The Layton football players just simply never gave in as they stunned the team in the state with 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull out the dramatic victory. The Lancers, who had played so 32-3- 1 University of Utahs Running Utes did just that last Saturday afternoon and ran up a thrilling 8 football victory over the University of Wisconsin, a powerhouse in the Big Ten. BYU, meanwhile, was suffering a humiliating loss to the Texas Christian University Homed Frogs down in Fort Worth; and Weber d States Wildcats beat a team from Southern Utah State College, in Ogden. Utah States Aggies drew a bye for last weekend. According to USU Coach Chuck Shelton it was the second consecutive bye for the Aggies because we didnt play any better against Kentucky than if we had stayed home with a bye." Utahs win was not only exciting, it was impressive and for many it was unexpected. After all, Wisconsin like any team from the Big Ten Conference, and especially playing at home must be considered the favorite. And while the Ute stars were doing their job, there were a few unknowns that came front-centand showed their talent enough for a walk-o- n placekicker to receive an offer from Coach Jim Fassel of a full players scholarship. Scott Lieber, of Salt Lake City, booted three field goals the final kick being a with no time remaining on the clock to give the Utes that precious victory. I knew I could do it (kick the goals) because I have confidence in myself and I had relatives in the stands, commented Scott. Coach Fassel said he felt the same confidence in the kicker and all the players and "finally they have come to believe in themselves. The other hometown kid to really shine was little Rod Wells, of Tremonton, who stepped in for the injured Eddie Thomas and Shocked Wisconsin and pleasantly surprised the Utes by picking up 119 yards rushing, including a couple of long gainers. Coach Fassell was optimistic earlier in the week that his standout rusher (Johnson) would recover from a knee injury and be fit to play. But a midweek examination not only put Johnson out for the game, it placed him on the disabled list for the entire season. 8 and weighs 180 pounds. He knew he would be Wells is only playing behind Johnson (an returnee) and was given the last grid scholarship the Utes had to offer just to keep him around. The game started a little dismal for the Utes, with quarterback Chris Mendonca being caught in the endzone for two points. Then the Badgers kicked a field goal and it was soon 0 in favor of the home team. Utah .vent up 5 on a touchdown pass to Curt Jones with only 1:05 left in the quarter. The Utes also converted on a two-poin conversion. The "odd scores of 11-- 8 and 1 existed with the Utes driving 64 yards downfield with Martel Black scoring after the Badgers had surged ahead on a long run and a two-yar- d plunge. Wisconsin again moved ahead on a second TD by Marvin Artley, the Badgers most talented back. It began to rain in the second half and the two teams continued to battle. By now, Scott Mitchell was leading the Utes at have a see-sathe quarterback helm. He moved the Utes to the Wisconsin one and Black bulled his way to paydirt. The game was beginning to get tense, but the Utes held a slim lead with just under seven minutes left to play. seven-poiWisconsin shocked the Utes with a scamper by Steve Vinci and a TD by Artley on a nifty pitchout. This knotted the score at 8 with 6:04 left to play. But the Utes defense managed to hold a Badger threat and with less than two minutes to play Harry gathered in a Mitchell pass to set up g field goal. Lieber s final In the only game played at home, Weber State found the going a little more than expected, but managed to pull off a victory. from Cedar But it was the costly mistakes of the visiting City who fumbled eight times, but lost only two; and gave up two TD return by Webers costly interceptions, the last being a Calvin Hampton which gave the W ildcats a comfortable 9 lead with ' ' only 3:40 left in the game. Weber, too, had its turnover problems, including three intercepted passes (one for an SUSC score); two fumbles; 120 yards on 10 penalties; and some very poor punting. Coach Mike Price said it might have been a matter of not getting his team up for the but whatever the reason, I was not pleased with the execution of either the offense or the defense in this game. They are a real good Division II team, but we didnt play up to our potential. I hope we improve for conference competition that begins next Saturday against Boise State. . . weoer took advantage oi a penalty situation and attempted an on- side kick which was recovered by the Wildcats tight end Peter Macon on the SUSC line. BYU Coach LaVell Edwards and his coaching staff must have been asking themselves over the weekend: how do you stop the quarterback option? The Homed Frogs of Fort Worth werent fancy with the offense they ran all night but they certainly executed their plays well thus baffling the BYU 'defense from the start to finish. When you have a quarterback that can really scramble, such as - David Rasco of TCU, it maker the offense even tougher to contain. Rasco rushed on 23. designed plays for 105 yards. Included was a TD run around end. Then when the pursuit got hot, and the Cougars zeroed in on Rasco, the nifty little QB would simply pitchout to his two trailing halfbacks Tony Jeffrey, who ran 107 yards on 19 carries or Tony Dalhard who recorded 99 yards on just 8 carries, including a 58- - yard TD run. The Homed Frogs made it look so easy and so precise. Their execution was almost flawless, and it made the TCU fans wonder how the Homed Frogs had lost its two first games of the season. But Saturdays tilt against BYU was the season opener for the Texans, and they havent lost but a handful of openers at home in the past 75 or more years. Coach Edwards said he was not pleased with the Cougars perform ance. We were still celebrating our win over Texas and let the week of intense practice get away from us. We just werent ready to play, he said. TCU used a defense. They didnt figure BYU could run the ball well and they couldnt, or at least didnt in this game. This meant the Cougars had to pass even when they didnt want to. They also committed seven turnovers, and failed to capitalize on TCU miscues which gave the Cougars good field position. veer-wishbo- 34-ya- nt 31-1- 4. top-rank- come-from-behi- brilliantly in the first half, took forever to find themselves in the third quarter. The Layton kids ran 43 offensive plays to Bonnevilles 19 in the first half and were ahead 14-but nothing went right in the third quarter as Bonneville scored 18 unanswered points of their own to go ahead 24-1- 4 to start the final quarter of play. The coffin door to the third quarter was shut tight for Layton when Troy Murray threw an interception that gave Bonneville the ball on Laytons 35 yard line. Murray said later he didnt get into the first kick at all, saying he kicked it with his heel. The ball missed its target by a mile, but because of a roughing-th- e kicker call, Layton was going to get another chance. We offense thing worked a little extra on Box Elders and even though they had our number the first half, we controlled them fairly well in the second half. The Bees built up a 7 first half lead, despite the fact Clearfield was moving the ball offensively but just couldnt score like they wanted to. In the second half Clearfield scored twice and Box Elder managed only one TD. Geertgens, who late in the game made a spectacular 50 yard gainer to yank his team out of a third and long deep in their own territory, is getting the reputation as an extremely tough competitor. I was glad coach gave me the ball on that one, said Monte, I wanted to get us out of that hole. Of course both Sam Toomer and Jeff VonCollin made some great blocks and I was gone. I guess I can thank my older brother Blake for a lot of my competitiveness. He played here two years ago and before that we used to play a lot of football and basketball together. I was the younger brother who had to battle a little harder and now Im a better athlete for it. Blake really taught me a lot. Blake is currently in the Army but plans to walk-o- n at Weber State next fall with the Wildcat football program. There wont be a team in our league that will go undefeated, said Geertgens, Every team is so competitive this year. We have a pretty good team right now. Coach Hancock has pretty high hopes on our team as well. He says this is the first team hes had that he says hes had fun with. Hes believing in us which is one reason why we are 1 this season.
