This will be the fourth year that Ernest and Beverly Sickingers hobby has led them to Bountifuls Tabernacle Square and the arts festival, part of the Main Street USA Summeifest. Sickingers lovingly-crafte- d, handmade wooden chests are a favored item by many festival browsers, and he has had to resist numerous offers to go into business selling his handiwork. But for Ernie and his wife, Bc, who decorations on paints tole-siyl- e the charming boxes, the effort is one they onl do in thei spare time. In fact, the Clearfield residents only participate in two festivals a year and Bountiful is fortunate to I; one of them. Polished and painted chests that hold VCR tapes, cassette tapes, genealogical records, and recipes are among Sickingers offerings. He also makes what he cails treasure chests in various sizes that, as well as being beautiful pieces of furniture, can be used a' sewing baskets, to hold sweaters, etc. I like that kind of work," said Ernie. Its a pretty piece of furniture as well as useful. Another o his creations is the mountain man chest, unfinished with a more rugged appearance, that is popular with outdoorsmen who use them to store fishing equipment, hunting gear, ammo and black powder. for Bev He also makes to paint and make into homey decorations. Babysitting class slated PTA volunteers contributed the number e 81 employees to the schools of Davis District reported Edrice Christensen, Regional PTA president to the board of education. Mrs. Christensen said the service was given in many areas and by people with various backgrounds including retired educators, parents, businesses and professionals. The hours volunteered increased greatly over the number counted for the 1985-8- 6 school year. Board member Dr. Ray Briscoe challenged the PTA to increase the volunteer hours in 1987-8- 8 by at least 50 percent. We need this to help our schools succeed, he commented. Mrs. Christensen commented that PTA is not a punch and cookies organization. It has five main objectives and each PTA project must conform to one of the objectives. The PTA president observed that this region has become more active politically than it has been in the past. PTA representatives attend all Board of Education meetings. They lobby for education bills each year at the state legislature sessions. Shauna Nakaya, the legislative chairman, told board members of seven objectives the state PTA will pursue with the legislature his year. These objectives are: I . Support excellence through the career ladder program and other means that promote better teaching; 2. Support the arts as part of the CORE curriculum; 3. Support education reform through many programs including extended days; 4. Support sex education programs that promote the parent as the primary educator; 5. Support effective management especially to avoid duplication of services; 6. Keep extra curricular activities secondary to the school program and impose reasonable ceilings on expenses and 7. Develop programs to prevent youth suicides. Mrs. Nakaya said two years ago the PTA took the position of supporting tax increases for education. She said the biggest legislative challenge this year will be the proposed tax FARMINGTON of hours equivalent to Policys changed again If wt -. i J S t , ' , t v 5) 1 |
