They got to work side by side with a professional artist preparing a large 4x8 foot mural that will be displayed in several places including the first Very Special Arts Festival that will be held at Layton High School April 29. The students who participated in the project by the Davis School District and the Utah Arts Council through the Very Special Arts program were first graders in the special education program and their sixth grade tutors. Guest artist was Wayne Geary. Mr. Geary has visited 10 Davis County elementary schools during the last two weeks. At each school, he works with the students to create a large mural that will portray one of the seasons. Burtons mural represents autumn. The creative process begins with ideas. Mr. Geary asked students what they like to do in the autumn. He got many ideas that could be transferred to a picture concept. The students individually worked to draw their own segment that was then later incorporated into the large mural. Live student models were used as the focal point for the mural. The students laid down on the masonite board and other students traced their outline. This was the beging ning of the process. Acryllic paints were used because they dry quickly and are easier for young people to handle. The finished product was surprisingly good, adult observers felt. mural-makin- Mr. Geary is a professional artist with a masters degree from the University of Utah. He paints mostly in acryllics and oils. His favorite subjects are landscapes and abstracts. He has exhibited in art galleries and group shows through the state and elsewhere. Mr. Geary has paintings hanging in the new Cliff Lodge at Snowbird and in the new Salt Lake County Complex. He has worked with the Artist in Residence program in Utah for the past three years. He visits about six schools each year, spending two weeks in each school. He has also been involved in the Artist in Residence program in New Mexico. The murals completed at the schools in Davis County where Mr. Geary has assisted young artists will be displayed to the public on April 29 at Layton High School as part of the North End Very Special Arts Festival which will include art, drama, theatre and music. The public is invited. I |
