Older than the governments of Britain, France or Spain; younger and newer than the newspaper you hold in your hand: these are the United States of America whose birthday we celebrate today. An indestructible Union of indestructible States . . . and, apparently, an indestructible Idea amendments as well. The American Idea has encouraged growth and betterment and change, all within that wonderful Constitutional framework of justice and freedom. It has seen pioneers become small farmers and small farmers become agricultural business men. Since 1900, it has enabled the very structure of classic capitalism to peacefully change. Labor that was once exploited as a commodity is now paid high wages so that it can buy and consume more. Workmen, farmers and professional people have become investors, too, and together largely own great business corporations through stock holdings and hire their management. Virginia planters, Pennsylvania woodsmen, New York merchants, Massachusetts farmers! They sweated out the Constitution and hammered out the Bill of Rights while dukes and earls still governed England by right of inheritance and a tyrant king ruled in Paris. For of all the free governments in the world, only the Swiss is older than our own. Yet the American Idea, the American Revolution which gave birth to the United States, is one of the newest things on earth. It is a Revolution that is still going on. Jeffersons immortal Declaration still thunders down the centuries to stir mens souls from misery. Lincolns Government of the people, by the people, for the people still kindles hope in the hearts of millions who toil in slavery. The spirit of 1776 still washes like a tide across the oppressed peoples of the earth. old-fashion- ed Under a free government a free economic system has at last brought opportunity, education and better living to more people than ever before in history. We are building a classless society based not on want but on plenty. The American Revolution is the real Revolution. It truly promises human as the fearful despots in dignity, self government, light, order and law the Kremlin well know. It reveals the Marxist claptrap for the medieval quackery it really is. Above all, the justice and freedom inherent in the American Idea have made possible the flowering of a national conscience; the growth of a deep feeling of responsibility under God to our fellow man wherever he may be.
