england march SM 21 N 1852 and came to fillmore with his S parents in 1864 he married at the af of seventeen years elizabeth steel W has borne him eleven children at eight whom six boys and two girls girl mourn the loss lose of an indulgent fat father brother ashman was an energetic 1 I aadi valued citizen and has been elected 10 many offices of trust both municipal od and county all of which he tilled filled with homr he had a lingering sickness rheumatism and suffered with h he fortitude for many months all done for him that science and andlor lo 10 friendship could suggest until at last knew that he must cross the span w abi separates this from a higher life he called his family and friends abou arou ar mn him like unto one about to leave leav e for 1 foreign mission he counseled his should wash his body after death then resignedly passed aay there was a very large gatherl the funeral on sunday the n long cortege was led by the fillmon brass brase band playing appropriate music most the speakers chosen by the decem deceased were elders joshua greenwood A melville and bishop T C Calli of at whom spoke of their long and honorable acquaint acquaintance anee with the dea dand gave of counsel to the living the holden choir came over to do the sing eing tog ua 08 the deceased his mother and irett and other relatives were members of our oar choir the aged father is resigned penn fenn beloved wife of brother george penn fenn of salina departed this life on the day of january 1896 sister penn fenn was born on the eth day of oc ober 1830 at new baaford Bad ford near nottingham nottingham shire england became a member of the church of jesus christ of latter lamer day i saints in the year 1850 and emigrated to america in the year 1857 crossing the plains to utah in 1860 in joseph W e youngs company and settling in provo r sm she was waa married to brother george penn fenn I 1 ahe same fall moved to gunnison in the ibe year 1862 1804 and from there to Salina Sevier county in 1879 where she lived till the time tim other eother death she was a faithful latter day saint a dutiful wife and lov tag ing mother she had many friends and acquaintances throughout the state and leaves behind her a husband and six aix ob children ildren and several grandchildren to mourn her loss besides a host of friends funeral services vices were held in the salina meeting general debility aged 85 years 7 mouths months 15 days thomaa thom heninger son eon of william and elizabeth greever heninger Hening erp was born june 10 1810 in burks burke garden tazewell Taze weil county virginia he married ann thomas of smyth monty county va december 27 1837 by whom he has had eight children four sons and four daughters five of whom survive his death of those living three are sons one through his bis children he has had forty five grandchildren great i grandchildren by gi a second wife ann bartlett heninger he has one son thomas thomaa W thomas heninger was a virginia farmer fanner of the first rank he owned one of the best beat farms in one of the most fertile ih and most beautiful valleys in the old dominion and it was always kept in a most perfect condition he associated with this posse ion of kalua valuable I 1 property bis a own indefatigable labor a and untiring indus industry ry wilh ith these potent factors he made of his home a very paradise to his bis family and to those who were fortunate enough to come under his roof the comforts of his home were genero generously extended to use the weary traveler who chanced to 10 come near his bis door and the stranger was ever welcome elcome vr he possessed to an eminent degree that peculiar kind of hospitality that is in characteristic of the true virginian those who stood in need always r received a bounty from him when he was a appealed p to mormon elders from the earliest r days of mormonism mor monism were always invited 11 to share his hospitality and to accept 00 a resting place in his house from the days of elder jedediah M grants mission to virginia in 1841 to the time of his leaving virginia for utah in 1871 the home of thomas heninger was made the headquarters for the mormon elders visiting that portion of mhd state although he did not become a member of the church until the spring of 1870 when he was baptized by the writer the writer in person has had the privilege of frequently enjoying enio ying the generous hospitalities of the deceased and of feeling the warmth of his strong friendship on more than one occasion in his friendship thomas heninger Heo inger was staunch the writer will perpetuate in memory his many acts of kindness he emigrated with his family in 1871 and located in ogden where he resided until his death but the real life and true ghar character acter of thomas hettinger heninger were better known in virginia than in utah for it was in the former state where he spent the energies of his young and ulso also his more matured manhood in the development of that character which made him a most valuable citizen the more prominent features of that dhar character acter were the strictest honesty coupled with truthfulness combined with the highest order of integrity through industry guided by methodical plans he acquired an all honorable independence he passed away in peace after several days of the most excruciating pain rest best to his body and quiet to his soul soui and may god bless his family T B LEWIS ELDER JOSEPH LAWSON OGDEN utah jan 23 1896 elder joseph lawson was the il son 0 n of edward lawson and margaret cottler cottier Law lawson sori he was born at douglas isle of man december 9 1824 his father was a miller and wholesaler in grain flour etc and was the proprietor of a large corn exchange he did an extensive business on the island and elsewhere joseph received his education in his native town and was for a number of years his right band man he kept the books and conducted the entire business of the establishment and thus relieved his lather of much care and responsibility after the fullness of the gospel as preached reached by the elders of the church of nesum besun christ of latter laiter day saints had invaded the island joseph lawson lansou became an ALten attentive tive and earnest student of mor he was ultimately convinced that it was true and on february 27 1844 was baptized by john on december 9 1845 he was united in marriage to miss eleanor garnett she was wap the daughter of hugh garnett and catharine christian garnett she was born at douglas isle of man on november 1823 in 1846 she was baptized at liverpool by joseph hall soon after their marriage they emigrated to the united states and settled in new orleans la IA during one of the terrible scourges urges that visited that cry city mrs lawson was prostrated and on july 27 1853 she succumbed to the yellow fever she had scarcely reached the prime of life being not 30 years of age when she died there were no children of t this his marriage after the death of his wife brother lawson returned to england and from there he went to the isle of man he remained on his native island a little over one year doing what he could to convince his friends and neighbors that the falness of the gospel had been bee restored to earth by an angel sent from heaven for that thai purpose on may 25 1854 he was ordained an elder at douglas under the hands of J W coward and james cross he had previously been ordained a pries oct 3 1847 L he labored in a local capacity in the ministry till march of that year he embarked ou on board the large Ju juventa vents bound for philadelphia with over mormons cormons on board from philadelphia he went forward by railroad and steamboat to mormon grove the outfitting outwitting out fitting point for that years mormon overland em emigration afra tion it was located about three m lea west of atchison kansas he reached the grove may 27 and remained there until june 7 when he be commenced his overland journey to utah there were afif fitin ty three negroes in the company under the command of captain john hinley he reached salt lake city near sundown september eth and on the ath ot of same month he took to himself for a wife ruth M greenway the ceremony being performed by bishop abraham hoagland on nov 2nd and he with his wife came to ogden which place since that time they have made their permanent home here he engaged in n agrical ure also in opening up canyon roads building canals and other water courses for irrigation and mill purposes he held stock in and assisted to dig out the ogden canal on june 28 1857 he was ordained a seventy and joined the fifty third quorum which he faithfully magnified he labored as a home missionary in the weber stake for several years preaching the gospel in the various seale settlements ments as well as in ogden city at a general conference held at salt lake city april 7 1866 he was called to go on a mission to great britain on the of the same month he was set met apart by prisident president john taylor and others and on the he he started on his hie mission in he traveled on foot being being without puree urse or script and tard suffering ering many hardships hardships ships and often making the cold ground his bed at night he reached chicago 1111 on june where for lack of funds he slept out of doors four nights from chicago he went to new york arriving there august ath still without money here he was compelled to sleep out nine nights he walked in and around new york for some considerable time to earn means to enable him to further prosecute his journey to his destination deatina tion on september 26 h he took passage on the steamship palmyra bound for liverpool england where he ax rived strived october jtb and reported at the headquarters of the british mission he labored in the ministry in liverpool until the when he be was appointed to preach the gospel on the isle of man there he continued doing missionary work until november when he received another appointment to labor in the welsh district under the direction of elder abel evans evana again on december of the same year he was waa sent to travel and preach in the Pembroke shire conference under the presidency of elder william white in the latter field his ministry was continued until june 1868 at which date he be was appointed to preside over the norwich conference in addition to the above named places elder lawson did a great deal of effective missionary work in worcestershire herefordshire Hereford shire and an d many other towns and villages in england and wherever he went he made a fostof hot of kind friends during the above named periods he labored incessantly notwithstanding he had bad become much reduced physically in the fall of the year 1869 he was honorably released from his mission to return home on sept he took passage on board the steamship manhattan with latter day saints bound for now new york he was appointed to preside over the company they arrived at that point oct 70 and then proceeded at once by railroad for utah he arrived at ogden city oct where he rested after his long and toilsome journey on december he was ordained a high priest by president lorin lonn parr farr and was secretary of the high priests quorum of the weber stake for about seven years on may 25 1889 elder lawson received another letter of appointment to fill a mission to great britain this time he was wag accompanied by his wife they arrived in new york about the lat of june and on the uh sailed from that port on the steamship wisconsin and on the landed in liverpool from there he was again sent to the isle of man but in consequence of severe physical debility he was to travel so he held what was called fireside preach ings in the houses of the saints while there he also was engaged in searching tor for the genealogies of his ancestors in which he was successful this mission was a very brief one owing to his sickness on august 1889 he with his wife boarded the steamship wisconsin and sailed from liverpool to new york arriving there september on their return trip and when about four our miles from lynch lynchburg burg they had a narrow escape from death the train was wrecked several passengers were severely injured but elder lawson and wife escaped uninjured ared I 1 on september they arrived at ogden again in safety for seven years previous to his death joseph lawson was confined to his house with palsy he was completely paralyzed and unable to help himself in any manner in his sad affliction his faithful wife nursed him until his death affectionately he passed peacefully away early on new years morning 1896 and was interred in the ogden cemetery he was a man in whom veneration for the deity was strongly developed he was a devout worshiper worship erv and had the most implicit faith in the justice truth and mercy of god he was himself a just and upright iran beloved honored and esteemed by all who knew him he was true to his god to his country and its institutions he was devoted devotedly lv attached to his family and was dearly beloved by them he died in full faith that he would rise again on the morning of the first resurrection he had six sons one daughter and nineteen grand children JOSEPH JOSE PIff HALL MARY MABY ANN MELLOR FAYETTE sanpete co utah jan 15 1896 mary ann mellor died sept 15 1895 at fayette Fay eite iSan pete county after an illness of nine months she was born in warwick warwickshire Warwick shire england in 1819 and moved with her parents when a young child to leicester leicestershire Leicester shire she was the mother of twelve children she first heard the gospel gobdel in bradford i yorkshire where she with her husband and children had moved to secure work in 1844 her husband had heard of the latter day saints and going to hear what they preached he be came home and told their belief and read the bible to her of the angel flying through the heavens and of their speaking in unknown tongues ot of healing beating and miracles until she he desired to co go and hear them herself so in 1844 her husband took care of the children and let her go and hear tor for herself as she lived some two miles away from the place ot of meeting she went and while there listening to the testimonies and the speaking in tong pes ves a vision of beautiful stars seemed to pass before her eyes back and forward she could not keep her seat but got up and asked what she should do to be saved the presiding elder said repent and be baptized and she should receive the holy ghost she gave in her name and was baptized that same night on their return to leicester her husband was ordained to the office of elder and set apart to preside over the leicester branch and surrounding villages which he did until may 1856 when he received a notice from liverpool office to be there with |
