Emery Mining Company of Hunting-ton- , Utah announced Friday that it had notified Joseph P. Brennan, President of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association of the company's withdrawal from the BCOA "effective upon receipt." Shortly thereafter, the International Union of the Unikted Mine Workers of America was notified that Emery Mining desired to negotitate separate Winningegt coach BYU football coach will address fireside Coach LaVell Edwards, head football coach at the Brigham Young University, and his wife will be the guest speakers at a Regional Young Adult Fireside to be held the evening of May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Ephraim First Ward Chapel. All Young Adults within the region are invited to attend with a special invitation being given to all high school seniors. In his nine seasons as head coach at BYU, Coach LaVell Edwards has moved the Cougar football program to new highs, compiling the best record of any football coach in BYU history. In 1976 k and 1977 his teams posted 2 in in a and 1978, records, 1979 the first undefeated season (11-0- ) in the schools history. This past season the Cougars duplicated the number of wins with an 11-- 1 mark and went on to bring Edwards his first Holiday Bowl win in a miraculous game not many spectators will ever forget. LaVell's teams havewon or shared five consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship, winning six of the last seven league titles. Coach Edwards has won numerous honors as a result of his coaching. In 1972 he was named WAS Coach of the Year, his first season as head coach of the cougars. Neil Savage, president of Emery Mining, which operated Utah Power and Light Companys coal mines in Emery County, said Emery miners last march voted 1 to accept a national contract offer. But the agreement was rejected due to strong opposition from the 3-- unions eastern members. Other major coal producers in the west are engaged primarily in surface mining operations and are not involved in the nationwide strike. Savage cited the fact that the other operators are still working as one of the incentives to withdraw from the BCOA. A statement released by the company Friday at a noon news conference noted, "It is clear that a national bargaining located in the East, by process Easterners, for Eastern mines and conditions, is not workable nor equitable for our employees nor for this company. Because our employees are nearly twice as productive as the national average for underground coal mine productivity we pay a disproportionate sharer of the national pension and retirement costs. Yet despite the nearly $7,000 per employee per year pension constribu-tio- n currently paid by Emery Mining, and an average pension constribution of nearly $4,000 nationally, our employees share no greater benefits than those less productive operations. The company calculated their loss during the time spent in negotiations at evening. Along with other numbers, a special finale, "I Love Ballet Music", involving the entire cast, will be performed. Company spokesmen characterized the condition of miners and the company as one of "economic hardship contrived by circumstances in the West to which the Eastern members of BCOA apparently could not relate. "The EMC and its employees have waited too long to get back to work, a statement released Friday by the Emery said. "We are Mining Company confident that a separate contract settlement would be a short process, a matter of a few days. Among several proposals the company siad it was prepared to discuss with the UMWA were wages, retirement and other fringe benefits, incentive plans, changes in grievance procedures, and a discussion Dancers from Krisjann's Dance Studio. Neil Savage was asked if he felt EMC's withdrawal from the association could lead to western BCOA. At this point. Savage said, the company and its management were not looking at that possibility, they were only looking to get their company back to work, but he added, "what could fall out of it is hard to say. Our employees have expressly stated a need for a separate company spokesmen agrewement, stated Friday. "All that remains to be done, both legally and ethically, is for the UMWA to agree to negotiate.
