People who know what they like at the Sanpete Fine Arts Council and Fphraim Victorian and St. Mark's Cathedral. All the power and rawness of the beginnings of the west are visible in the chainsaw carvings executed by Bob Draper of Mt. Pleasant. His massive carvings are done from tree trunks and both his bull rider and the Indians on horseback capture all the feeling of this area. In the professional category, the eye for detail Snow College Art Exhibit, which continues through April 4 at the Lucy Phillips on the Snow Library Campus, can do more than just mentally note their own winners. They can vote for the ones they like. exhibited in Wci.dy The judges of the Bromley's "Or- exhibit have already awarded their prizes. but it will be interesting when the votes are tallied to see where the general public's accolades go. As with any experience, I suspect my own likings are influenced by background. For that reason, "God's Cathedral", a large oil depicting pine forests caught my eye as being reminiscent of forests in my native Pennsylvania. Mary Wintch was the artist. As one who draws houses precisely as I did in first grade, I appreciated Lonnie Wintchs eye for perspective in her architectural sketches of an y chid" and "Cougar" both bring to life more detail than even a camera could capture. Les Bogh's unusual finishes 1 attributed, perhaps incorrectly, to the use of acrylics, and I have to confess, of all the paintings on exhibit, I found myself coming back again and again to admire "The Hay Truck". Fred Takasaki's painting "The Creation" provided almost a touch of humor as it depicted tourists lined up at the omnipresent guard rail to admire a waterfall. It was a scene repeated nearly every second of the day at nearlv every scenic Utah attraction and its familiarity spawned appreciation, and even a chuckle. Edith Morley Anderson's oil, "Roses", prompted a second look from several patrons, due to the unusual texture of the painting which made it at first appear to be needlepoint. Governor Scott M. Matheson has received notice that the state of Utah will gei an additional $984,185 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to continue the federal Weatherization Assistance Program through 1981. The painting carries with it a quality reminiscent of some of the works of C.C.A. Christensen. All in all, the exhibit would be worth traveling to see no matter where it was staged, but for the show to represent only Sanpete County artists makes it not only a locally more interesting phenomenon, but a tribute to the artists, and the art appreciators, of Sanpete County. "The continuing spiral of energy prices cuts deep into everyones budget, but Utahns living on fixed and limited incomes are affected the greatest by these price increases," according to Utah Energy Office Director Jack Lyman.
