The couples left the Salt Lake Airport, landed briefly at Kennedy Airport in New York City, and from there flew to Rome, Italy. Here they stayed at the Excelsior Hotel, located next to the American Embassy. ay While in Rome, the Olsons and the Larsens, and other folks from the area, including Judge and Mrs. Don Tibbs of Manti and Mr. and Mrs. Newton Donaldson from Moroni and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Nielson from Richfield (Loretta Holm), took numerous side tours. Theysawthe Palazzo Venezia (the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior), the Colosseum, (built in the year 80 and which seated over 80,-0people), the remains of the Pantheon, which was built as a temple to Roman gods but was later converted to a church In Christian times. Inside this edifice is the tomb of the famous gifted painter, Raphael. They saw St. Peters Square in Vatican City and the famous St. Peters Basilica and the great art treasurers of Michelangelo, Bramante, Raphael and many others. A real treat for the Sanpete folks was to see the exquisite ceiling of the Slstine Chapel which was painted by Michaelangelo. tour took the travA day-loelers to Florence, where they saw many, many fabulous art treasures, including Michelangelos beautiful sculpture of David. They also viewed the 00 ng damage done by the 1966 floods that ravaged the city. Leaving Rome, the tour extended to Southern Italy first to Pompeii, the seaport and resort city which fell to the wrath of Mt. Vesuvius in 97 A.D. This city was covered with 21 feet of volcanic ash, but was later discovered completely intact, including many famous works of art. The visitors were amazed at the good condition of the homes , buildings and streets of this old city, which was built in 700 B.C. Ruts made by the Roman chariots could be seen cm the stone streets. The travelers passed through several other interesting cities along the route to Sorrento, including Naples. A highlight of their stay in Sorrento was a trip by steamer to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Capri, which they found breathtaking. From Sorrento the tour traveled by bus back to Rome. Here they boarded the jet, which landed in Shannon, Ireland for By coincidence, this was on St. Patricks Day and they got a spectacular aerial view of the Emerald Isle. Also, they had a good view of parts of France and flew over the English Channel, which was clearly visible from the air. They also had a rather uneasy view of the icebergs as they flew over Iceland enroute to New York. The tour was sponsored by Pfizer Company, who have ar- ranged tours for the past several years for Moroni Feed Company and other agricultural agencies for whom they supply chemical products. Mrs. Gerald Carpenter was a guest. The afternoon was spent sewing and looking at schoorpictures from the year 1900. Lillie Keller gave a reading. Luncheon was served and new officers were elected.
