Show Manti Messenger, Thursday, August 28, 1980 Templars Prepare for First Season Game This Friday by Brace Jennings The Manti High School football team, small in numbers but big in enthusiasm, will host the North Sanpete High School Hawks in the opening game of the fall campaign at Snow Stadium Friday afternoon at 4. The Templar junior varsity will swing into action a day earlier, this afternoon at 4 against the North Sanpete jayvees in Mt, Pleasant. New head coach Dewey Brundage says the varsity will operate out of a veer offense this year. Well be using passes and running plays in about equal proportions," he said. The veer offense isnt particularly different from the one the Templars have been using, he added. It should be fun for the fans, with a lot of variety and some deception to keep the other team guessing." That other team for this the weeks opener J North Sanpete Hawks who had one of their better seasons last year, getting into the state quarterfinals, have a number of key players back, includBruce ing quarterback Bailey. Coach Brundage has four assistants: Glen K. Goodwin, who is working with the ends; Clifford Hughes, with the backs, and Robert Anderson, whose main assignment is the junior varsity. The Manti varsity has a number of veteran players back, including several who have been regulars for two years. That will provide the starting offensive and defensive units with experienced players in several positions. Because of the shortage of squadsmen, however, some of the players will be playing on both the offensive and defensive units. The junior varsity is similarly situated, with about 30 freshmen and sophomores out for the team. Two of the experienced varsity players who had V. been counted on to fill key positions will miss several games. Doug Alder, who has had one year of varsity experience and was expected to play end on both offense and defense, had an appendectomy this week. And Blake Allred, another of last years regulars, who was slated to play linebacker, is recovering from surgery and wont suit up for a couple of weeks.
