Before the tailings were there, pioneers could look out and see the shining blue of the Great Salt Lake, the place that Brigham Young called the point of the west mountains. Some of the youth are surprised that there was even a cave so close to town. As Jackie Sudbury points out the few buildings still in existence at the old town site of Garfield, others speak of the many homes that dot the Magna area that were physically moved and replaced on new foundations in town, especially homes on Western Drive and on 3100 South, though those arent the only ones. The group travels around the mountain to Cemetery Hill. Soon folks are pointing out familiar names on headstones .like Coon, Rushton, Sadler, Hardman, and many more. They move to the rocks and look out over the valley in the breeze. It becomes almost a quiet moment as Magna spreads out below. One of the kids calls his mother on a cell phone to tell her how magnificent the view is. Main Street is next on the list and becomes a feast of history as some of the adults point out building after building, sharing memories of stories told to them by the older generation, and even of what they remember as kids: JC Penny was here, old First Security bank was there, just east of the Gym Theatre was old Magna Coal and Lumber, and Dykes Drug, Glens Elementary, Meat, Webster Paulos Chevrolet.... Sudbury points to a building that now looks That was Rock vacant: Market. They sold Springs more beer than anywhere in the county. They make a quick stop at Colosimos. The smell of spice and cooking meat balls is like a welcoming hug. Of the historical hike, Alicia Duckworth says: I get to learn more about my heritage, my family... Magna people. I was bom in California, says Brittany Harris. Where I grew up, it was all new and there was, like, nothing that was old. But there are few plaques, few monuments, no paved hiking paths pointing the way, just memories of those who care to tell. The West Mountain Ward youth have a vision for a future With only six council mem- bers attending its March 6 meeting, the Magna Town Council was unable to vote on any of the issues on the agenda. Council members still listened to the issues and discussed important matters affecting the community. Lake The Salt County Sheriffs office reported poor turnout to a neighborhood watch meeting held Feb. 26th. Apparently there were some conflicts with PTA meetings the same night. The officers speaking to the council said they would still press forward with the program in Magna. Stacee Adams, from the Salt .LakCounty Mayors Office Tqpotipd on the progress new Magna Library. The new library is planned to be built on Magna Main Street at 8900 West. The project has been delayed by resistance from property owner Darrell Kilpack. The county has condemned Mr. Kilpacks property to make way for the new library. After multiple property appraisals, the county settled the issue and transferred funds to compensate Kilpack for the historical trail, perhaps paved and fenced in. The area could really use a historical trail, Bishop Kessler says. New people have moved into the area that do not know its rich history.... When you have a feeling of history and of the richness of the past of where youre living, it creates roots, and you have a certain greater pride for your area; you feel better about where you are. Yesterday we broke the youth up into three groups. Each group was mentored by a golden oldie, which is a person who has lived here for many, many years, and who knows the area.... They each made their own map of a historical trail that they would like to see. At some point were going to move it all into one map.... put together an actual historical trail, and then work together with the township, with the Magna Chamber of Commerce, with Kennicott, also with the State of Utah to build one. And with the Boy Scouts of America: we would also like to make this a badge, a historical trail hike badge. And so we can see this is really killing many birds with just one stone. Speaking of a future hiking trail, Eric Gordon says: I learned a lot of stuff about tion but was unable to nte on Addiessing the count il I01 tin Shawn was second time a local Timothy, Chpms High student. Timothy is planning to property into a special holding account. He has access to that money any time he wants, but he has refused to go get it, Adams said.
