The previous two, Care of the Spitfire Grill, and Happy Texas stunk it up at the box office, and lost plenty of money for their distrubu-tor- s. Sunshine, however, has the forty year old virgin Steve Carell in a lead role, along with Kinnear and Toni Greg Collette, all very hot actors, so this isnt much of a risk. Plus, the film is quite funny, following a frighteningly dysfunctional family from New Mexico to California in a busted VW van, in order that their can compete in a kids beauty pagaenL Carell is a spumed gay man on suicide watch, while Kinnear is a motivational speaker who inspires almost no motivation. The best part of all is Alan Arkin as the crass, cynical grandfather, who is responsible for the little girls unsetdance routine. tling Lighthearted fun with a nice dark sensibility. Gotta love it My favorite film of the Fest was Neil Young; Heart of Gold screening in the Premiere A concert film category. directed expertly by Jonathan Demme, it gives us a candid entry into the mind and indeed heart of the ageless folk rocker. Upping the stakes, the film was shot just before Young was headed to the hospital for a life or death operation, and so his already philosophical nature :was perhaps even more pro-- ; nounced. He was absolutely refined as a man fighting through the recent loss of his lover, but still able to penetrate the night for answers to a strangers death. Stettner (The Business of Strangers) has a knack for showing us the pain of ordinary characters who suffer quietly. In the often edgy, always iffy Stettners Night Robin Williams as a gay late-nigIradio host who must leave the comfort of his station to solve the haunting mystery of a troubled caller. I was afraid this ht Dramatic Competition, my the Forgiven, diswhite a of harrowing story trict attorney who may have favorite was compromised his ethics in order to convict a black suspect of killing a police officer. After six years on death row, the incarcerated man is pardoned just minutes before his execution, and then shows up smack in the middle of the D. A.s campaign for the U.S. Senate. Retribution is a very bad business indeed. This film is remarkable in that it forces us to make our own hard decisions on what is right or wrong - and as in life, there are no easy answers. In the Spectrum category, there was a terrific little Danish comedy called Adams Apple, the story of a paroled convict doing community service at a small rural church. The pastor there is living in complete denial of his excruciatingly sad personal life, and it becomes the consummate goal of the ex-cto mb the mans optimistic nose deep into the stink of reality. And the pastor will have none of it These two stubborn wills clash together with dark and very dry comic force, nearly pushing the envelope too far, but always stepping back at the last moment Confident ascer-bi- c filmmaking with an excellent upbeat ending.
