Show May 5, 2005 THE MAGN4 TIMES, W 9 EST VALLEY NEW S, KEARNS POST Health Myitis about obesiifty Recently, the Centers for Control Disease and Prevention announced that, in an earlier report on obesity, they had grossly overestimated the risk of death from overweight. Their new report found that people who are overweight but not obese have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight do, and that the risk of death from obesity was seen mostly in the extremely obese. Still, the government guidelines for a healthy weight fail to consider this information. Unfortunately, much of the current obesity health care is based on misinformation, myth and size bias, rather than accurate information, says Frances Berg, internationally recognized authority on weight issues and disordered eating, and author of - higher death rates with weight loss, including the Framingham Heart Study, Harvard Alumni Study, and follow-uI NHANES Health risks may be related to the loss of lean body mass: muscle, bone and organs. MYTH 4: Current treatments are safe and effective (diet, drugs, surgery). FACT: False. All current weight loss methods should be considered experimental, since none are proven longterm safe and effective. They only weight cycle most people or worse, cause injury or even death. MYTH 5: Scare tactics and an emphasis on thinness help people lose weight, prevent obesity, and do no harm. FACT: False. Obesity rates rose steeply over the last 30 years, as pressures to be thin increased. Scaring children and adults about the risks of obesity adds to their or not. 2: MYTH Healthy weight, as currently defined, depicts the range of lowest health risk (BMI 18.5 to UNDERAGE AND OVERWEIGHT (Hatherleigh, Traditional pro$16.95). grams for solving overweight issues are not working and may even be causing new problems, such as eating disorders. Here are some myths and controversies that Ms. Berg has identified in health care today: MYTH 1: Obesity causes the health risks associated with it. FACT: We dont know, but it seems unlikely; both may be caused by a third factor. Inactivity is shown as a strongcontributing factor that may cause both obesity and related risks (others may be stress and weight cycling). Increased activity dramatically improves most health risks weather weight is lost 24.9)- p. . FACT: False. The weight associated with the lowest death rate is in the overrange (BMI 25- weight 29.9)- , with almost no related risk up to a BMI of 35, according to the latest CDC research. This confirms an earlier review of 236 constudies the trolled by National Institutes of Health, NHLBI. (Despite this evidence, NIH defines healthy weight as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9; overweight as 25 to 29.9; obesity, 30 and over.) 3: Health is MYTH always improved by weight loss. FACT: False. At least 15 studies show large long-term healthy ways. It piomotes compassionate health care, and respect acceptance, and of dixeisity, appreciation defines health by physical, mental and social not weight. Frances Berg is an known authonty on obesity and disoidered eating. She is a licensed nutritionist, family wellness specialist, adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, books. lei and author of book new paperback & OVERUNDERAGE WEIGHT: stress, anxiety, and potential immune suppression leading to higher risks, and fails to help them lose weight. An overemphasis on thinness can lead to body hatred, hazardous weight loss, malnutrition, size discrimination, and eating disorders. Berg points out that these myths benefit the weight loss industry, not the individual or society. The fiction they keep ali e is that overweight and obesity are severe risks, threatening the health of most Americans, adding greatly to healthcare costs, and therefore weight loss treatment, even if not safe or effective, is urgently needed. health Increasingly are moving ahead providers to the Health at Any Size approach (also known as Health at Every Size), which focuses on wellness and w holeness, living actively, and eating. in normal. well-bein- g, nitei-national- ly 1 1 1 Childhood Americas What Crisis Exery Obesity Know Needs to Family Books, Living (Healthy comthe $16.95), explores eatand issues of weight plex a includes and ing, plan for raising healthy weight children. usiness Directory To or e-m- ail Over 33 years la business... roots, roots Wind Damage Call Free 973-766- -- - AXIOM Your Framing 3 4587998 250-766- 3 FOR YOUR HOME.
