The goal of tit is campaign is to reduce the effect of the fires by generating Firewise Communities, groups of people w ho are aw are of existing factors in their environment that may contribute to the cause or spread of wildfires and w ho prepare their homes and acreage in order to reduce the risk of loss. Firewise Safety Tips Remove dead or overhanging branches. Store firewood away from your house. Create a 30 foot perimeter free of fire fuel on all sides of your house. Space trees and shrubs to lower wildfire potential. Remove dead leaves and branches from trees and plants and dead needles and leaves from the ground on your property. It's not just an idle question. In just three years, fire devastated 17,000 square miles of wildlands throughout the United States. These fires consumed more than 2.500 homes and other structures. representing a total loss of more than $60 million in property. In 2000. America experienced one of the greatest losses of land-8.million acres-t- o wildfires since 1957. Although high temperatures, low humidity and low rainfall increase the likelihood of a fire, wildfires can happen anywhere, at any time. The best defense against loss of homes and acreage is proper preparation at the beginning of w ildtire season. Whats Being Done In an effort to reduce the destructive impact and costs of severe wildland fires, a national service public advertising (PSA) campaign to designed generate Firewise Communities has been launched by the Advertising Council, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The campaign will help inform woodland homeowners, community groups and fire departments about the causes of wildfires and per (NAPSA)-Ho- w 4 ' Planting water-retainin- g succulents and foliage around your home is a simple way you can make it more defensible against u ddfires. on Hie r HsnecJs of car jatidn On Thursday, July 15, at 6:40 a.m., deputies responded to 3615 S. 900 E. on a possible car jacking. The original call came in from an UTA bus driver who told dispatch that a male had been assaulted and collapsed. When deputies arrived they found that the victim had been beaten and his 2002 GMC truck was taken at gun point. During the initial investigation it was determined that the v ictim is an acquaintance of the one of the suspects. The victim was visiting people in the residence. and called 911. The v ictim was taken to St. Mark's hospital with head lacerations, and was later released. The victim's truck was later located abandoned in Both susWest Jordan. Niue pects Fakatou and Celeste Johansen-Dunla- p are still outstanding and are considered armed and dangerous. Detectives are actively looking for them and would like to question diem about die incident. The suspects left in the victim's vehicle. The victim stumbled out of the garage into die roadway where a UTA bus was passing by. The bus driver stopped to render assistance both allegedly suspects assaulted die victim with a rifle and a screw driver. The Police still looking for suspect At 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20, an armed robbery occurred at die Deseret First Credit Union, located at 4645 S. 2700 W. Suspect is described as a white male, years of age, clean looking, blonde spiky hair, and has a medium build. Suspect used a stolen w hite Honda car to commit the crime and left the scene in it. This car was later 25-2- 0 found in West Valley City in die area of 3600 W. Great Lakes Dr. It is believed die suspect stole another white Honda from the Great Lake Dr. area. This vehicle is a 1991 model Accord with Utah plate It has tinted windows and a broken amber rear 546-WW- B. light. Investigators are looking into die possibility of die robbery being similar to odiers in die recent past. The suspect is a white male between 5 '8 and 5' 10. 0 weighing betwen He was wearing a pounds. striped shirt, tan pants and a blue Chicago Cubs cap. The Sheriff's Office would appreciate any information diat would aid in the apprehension of this robbery' suspect. Suspect Suspocft flees Bank robbery At 10:03 a.m. on Friday, July 16, deputies responded to a bank robbery at the Cyprus Credit Union located at 5750 S. Redwood Rd. A white male suspect entered die bank wearing a hat, glasses and a bandan na over his face. He pointed a gun at the teller and demanded money. The suspect then helped himself to the money and fled die bank. He left in an older green S 10 Blazer westbound from the bank. The suspect is a white male, approximately 5' 10 and 160 pounds. At die time of the robbery, he was wearing green, yellow and blue plaid shirt, white baseball gloves with a black stripe, hat, glasses and red bandan na. The vehicle he w as driving was a green S10 Blazer w ith stolen license plate number 809MFN. Please contact Sgt.
