Show Lifestyles to hold Stingers Les Mis is not miserable at Desert Star 2003 National Anthem auditions UGD U&gqflgAg fc seemed to be too old for the role and jokes made each time she was touched by . Fehr were not well understood and seemed out of By DEBBI OLSON r Editor I Les Miserables in one our and 15 minutes can be done, J if you're die Desert Star ; Theater, leave out a lot of the details and poke fun at the rest In it's comedic melodra-- f matic style. The Desert Star I Theater has created a new masterpiece from the masterful work of Victor Hugo, who might actually turn in his grave if he were to see this show, but not without a lot of laughter. With the talents of Spencer Ashby and Arika Schockmel as Mr and Madame Themardier, narrating the show in song, Les Mis moves along at a fast pace from the prison scene where Jean Val Jean, played by Jack Drayton is paroled by Javert played by Scott Holman, in a rare portrayal as the "bad guy," to die death of Fantine, played by Kathleen Haws, who begs Jean Val Jean to become the guardian of her daughter Cosette, in a long, and over-- . acted death scene. There are plenty of one-lin- e jibes targeted toward ' other Salt Lake Valley ; Theaters with bigger budgets, and todays' pop culture. There are political jibes against France, which comes out of todays headlines, all of which are right on target, well delivered and will leave J : ' Kerstin Davis stars as Cosette in DSTs Les Miserables. audiences laughing. The first half of the show moves at such break-nec- k speed you can hardly breathe, but not so fast that you can't understand what is happening, and you wonder why it wasn't this fast on Broadway. The ending of the first act is a brilliant ensemble number mirroring "West Side Story's" 'Tonight" with new lyrics and a set of lighted ladders that highlights each set of characters. It is fast and breathtaking and leaves hope that the rest of the show will be as brilliant as the first Unfortunately, that is not the case. The second half moves, which includes the French Revolution and a tour of die sewers of Paris, including a lot of bathroom humor, moves a lutle more slowly and is not as succinct as the first half. Brought into the scene is the love triangle between Cosette, played by Kerstin Davis, Eponine, plaed by Mary Parker Williams, and Marius, played by Steven Fehr. While Fehr and Davis fit their roles well, Williams place. Overall, Desert Stars production of Les Mis is a funny, if not brilliant piece of work and seems to be the split personality of the original; instead of the darker, solemn musical or Drama, it is light, funny, full of silliness and one of the most enjoyable shows DST has produced. Following the show, the . Desert Star Players do a tribute to the Great White Way of Broadway with a variety, of popular songs from famous Broadway shows. It. is a treat to see these talent- - , ed performers sing and dance without the all slap- stick that typically is found in its Olio performances. From the opening number of the ensemble doing "All That Jazz" to 'Give My Regards to Broadway" The cast shows its array of talent and showmanship. Les Miserables continues at the Desert Star Theater through May 10. Performances are at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays and at 7 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
