If you are a driver who rationalizes that it is permissible to park in a zone marked "Handicapped Parking Only", think again. It is not permissible. Handi- capped parking spaces are for handicapped motorists onlyl i ) j Vehicles must carry a window tag designating that it is operated by or used primarily for a handicapped person. Salt Lake County Sheriffs Department has authorized members of the West Patrol Citizens and Advisory Board and the Magna Neighborhood Watch to issue pink tag citations to vehicles illegally parked in handicap-designate- d spots. Any vehicle parked in a "Handicap Parking" space needs to be properly licensed or display the new red temporary placard on their rearview mirror. Anyone not in compliance will receive a pink tag denoting the date, time, and location that the i violation occurred. A copy of the "citation" will be forwarded to the Salt Lake County Sheriffs Office where violators may be contacted. Fine for a Handicapped parking violation may vary in different locations, but start at $100 - even if you were returning a video. Handicapped Destination A Placard can be obtained by first obtaining an application at the Motor Vehicle Department and having it filled out and signed by a doctor. The application should be submitted to the Utah Tax Commission and renewed yearly. An expiration date is on the bottom of the placard. Red tags denote temporary usage. Blue and both are tags are for renewable. The placards must be used only for the handicapped person's vehicle - and not for the family vehicle or for a friend driving a handicapped person on errands. So if a handicapped person wants to stay in the car and send you in for a gallon of milk park in a regular parking space! Westside Spotlight NINA ZABRISKIE Family ond Occupation: Nina was married to the late Robert J. Zabriskie and the couple raised three children: Kerry, Robert, and Jay WiH. Nina has been a member of the Magna community since second grade. She has worked as a school teacher m Magna and Kearns, as well as at Z.C.MJ. and Morris Airlines (now Southwest Airlines). Community Interests: Nina is president of the Oquirrh Community Fund of the United Way. Her efforts help the Magna community with funds for the senior center, youth baseball, and emergency funds for families, to name a few. The United Way is a great organization that helps countless numbers of people said Nina. Nina is also a member of the Magna Community Council where she has served for twelve yeas.
