Show ( The Magna TimeaWest Valley Newe, Thursday, April 16, 1998 5 Sports Granite District okays soccer for junior high girls by GARY R. BLODGETT EDITOR ' "Who's going to win? Utah by five." -- 5 Tom Barber! The National Collegiate Tournament is over. Utah had a great run. The Final Four is very impressive. So is second in the nation. I love the Final Four. It's the Final Five that gets me down the four teams the officials. - plus The referees are like a virus. As you know, a virus is intercellular. It can go anywhere, causing trouble everywhere it goes, disrupting things, leaving clutter behind. a The officials have too much to say about who gets there and who wins. Consider the StanfordRhode Island game. Heres the scene: Rhode Island is up six points with a minute left and has the ball. They throw it in and Stanford fouls. There is no call. Stanford fouls, gets the ball, scores, and is fouled. It's a 5 point The no call decided the game. It's a vims (official). How about the StanfordKentucky game? Stanford led all the way. Kentucky won in overtime. Stanford has a seven-fooh center. The refs fouled him out at the beginning of the overtime. His fifth foul was one of those phantom calls that no one sees except the official (vims). turn-aroun- d. t, one-inc- Could Stanford have beaten Kentucky with their seven-footare important in basketball. Maybe. Probably. Seven-footeer rs noticed? in there? Have you Perhaps you remember the UtahNorth Carolina game. Utah had a big lead, but Carolina got back into it. How did they do it? By mugging Utah players and taking the ball away. Did the officials call the fouls? NO! Remember when the score was tight, and Andre Miller was mnning down the floor and a Tar Heel grabbed his shirt? There was no call. It was an obvious infraction. I tell you the Final Five is a crap shoot. How about the semi-fingame when Makatar Ndiaye let Drew Hansen have an elbow to the Adams Apple? Where were the best officials in the States at then? Why no call? Why not ejection? WeTe talking, flagrant here. How can they not see it when hundreds of thousands can see it on television? Where are they looking? Up in the stands? If we're going to have a Final Five, lets have a Final Five. The officials must come to the party. How could they miss Makatar's spitting incident? His saliva was dribbling down Britton Johnson's chin. All of the number-on- e seeded teams were eliminated. Some by the officials association. Those fellas who are supposed to be the best in the country; impeccable, without blemish or spot, perfect men like you and I. I suggest that next year we just have the Final Four and not the Final Five. SIMONS SAYS: "Why do officials have such poor judgment? Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment." SIMONS SAYS: "If you criticize an official, he will cry to the commissioner, and the commissioner will wipe his tears with the N.C.A.A. checkbook." SIMONS SAYS; "Most basketball referees suffer from the hallucination that they are good. There is no cure for a disease of that magnitude." ,i ! ! al - officials.
