Show Local planned by Magna Lions to raise funds for eyesight programs Walk-A-Th- on The Magna Lions Club is sponsoring a Journey for Sight which will include the months of April and May. The purpose is to raise funds for their eyesight programs. During April, club members will be holding a month-lon- g and members will be taking pledges from residents of the community and businesses fore the miles they are pledging to walk. On Saturday, May 1 1, the Magna Lions will be conducting their annual White Cane Drive, and will Walk-A-Tho- n, be asking for contributions at various locations throughout the community. The costs of eye care have skyrocketed, and the number of persons needing financial assistance have also increased. This fiscal year, the Magna Lions have assisted 12 individuals with eye care needs primarily eye exams, frames and lenses. Magna Lions have also donated to the Lions Eye Foundation for the John Moran Eye Research The Center at the University of Utah. In the future, the goal of the Magna Lions Club is expanding its volunteer services to help provide a Leader Dog for someone in the community who is legally blind. The Magna Lions held their annual Family Night on March 28 and would like to thank its business partners for their contributions: Ambassador Pizza, Sams Club. Smiths, and Reams. West Valley Youth Pride Patch and Program by STACEY T. CASE STAFF WRITER For the fourth year running, West Valley City has offered a Youth Pride Day. During this day, the youth are invited to come to City Hall, leant more about the city, meet city leaders, and get involved in a rather unique way, thanks to the Herculean effort of Maryl and Wes McKnight. Maryl McKnight feels that by getting youth involved in their own city they will feel better Know the names of the mayor, city manager, and one WVC be Council representative; involved in a community activity such as WestFest, a Parks and Recreation sport or activity, or an Arts Council event. Other requirements are: reporting graffiti that may be found in the community or learn about GAP Graffiti Abatement Program; about who they are and proud of where they live. Her unique approach has gotten thousands of youth involved in a program that brings this all together. The Youth Pride Patch and Program is an opportunity to get the youth thinking about what they can do to sene the lOtyui it an .huh Hummi clhis year,::the. program, ties. in. with the Utah Centennial, as indicated on the patch. Youth who want to earn this patch have many opportunities in which to achieve it One such opportunity is to visit the displays in WVC Hall from 4--6 p.m. on April 17 during Youth Pride Day. The displays are sponsored by various organizations, including the West Valley Police and Fire Parks and departments, Recreation, Animal Shelter, Utah Grizzlies, and many more. Tours of Heritage Hall and Third Circuit Court will be operating, and a slide presentation of Utah scenery is also available. Simply by attending the event, participants will receive the patch.
