Show Campaign started to incorporate Magna into city 1 imwinMi L i: nzoning . by GARY R. BLODGETT EDITOR The Magna Area Community Council (MACC) started a peti- tion drive last Thursday with all but one of an estimated 85 persons in attendance favoring the proposal. Steven Harris, chairman of Planning and Zoning for MACC, asked for a discussion on annexation following a hearing on Magnas downzoning proposal. One thousand signatures are . needed for S.L. Co. Planning and Zoning to conduct a feasibility ! study. Most of the people in attendance signed the petitions. Signees must be a Magna resident and be of voting age. The boundaries of the proposed incorporation are between 7200 West and the Tooele County border and bet- ween Interstate Highway 80 and 9600 South. These boundaries are only proposed, they could be Harris told the changed, group. emphasized that the signof ing petitions is only the first of a long process of step incorporation. He Glenn Graham, of the Salt Lake County Planning and Zon- ing Department, encouraged he group to get started now; find out what the people want. Harris said that both the Magna Area Community Council and Magna Community Council (MCC) have supported There were incorporation. some MCC members in attendance. Jim Brusatto, a member of the Magna Area Community Council, and an active member of several local committees, chastised the residents of Magna who continually criticize the efforts of the community councils. Both councils are trying to do what is best for Magna. We may have had our differences at one time (when the councils split) but we have regrouped down its operation in 20 or 30 years? Then what would hap pen? Theres no way that Magna could survive (taxwise) without Kennecotts tax base, he said. Hercules Bacchus West would also be an important tax contributor. It would not be appropriate for Hercules to make a statement at this time, but Im certain that a stand will be taken by Hercules at a future date, commented Dave ' and are unitedly pushing forward," he said. Its going to take a united effort of all Magna to support so lets get incorporation together regardless of your personal feelings about the councils. Im tired of all the bickering. One interested resident pointed out that Kennecott Copper owns much of the pro- perty in Magna and that the community must have Ken- necott as a tax base. What if Kennecott is not interested in being incor- or should shut porated With a population of approximately 26,000, Magna is the largest unincorporated community in Utah. Magnas services are provided by Salt Lake County. We would have a variety of options regarding services which Magna could not immediately handle if incorporated, he noted. He said that police protection, for example, could be contracted through Salt Lake County. The biggest advantage, he would be to have a stressed, local government elected by its own residents instead of a County Commission serving many other areas besides Magna. Nic-pons- company spokesperson Harris explained that there would be several public hear- and a long process ings before incorporation could be accomplished. three-memb- er 3 )C Home of the Worlds Largest Missile VOLUME 86 NO. 18 & i THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1994 PH. Now - they mast wait aild see if Hie swimmers will come. The dedication and grand opening of the pool is scheduled for Friday, May 27 just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Salt Lake County Commissioners said they are tickled with the fact the pool will be opened on schedule. Its a magnificent, beautiful facility that we can all be proud of, they said. Ground was broken for the SI. 5 million swimming pool and complex last April 16 since then construction by Broderick and Howell Construction Company has progressed on schedule under the supervision of the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Department. Much of the landscaping is also complete and will be ready for the grand opening in May. The Olympic-siz- e pool is located on the southeast corner EDITOR No one had to be told that is on the increase. But Edgar R. (Ed) Robinson, distributor for Quorum Inter- - national, explained to the Magna Chamber of Commerce and the how their members be could protected public certain forms of crime the person, vehicle, or against home. Salt Lake County crime statistics show that there is a murder locally an average of once a week; a reported rape every 12 hours; and a home or vehicle burglary every half hour, said Robinson. He said Utahns used to feel safe walking the streets, safe in their home, and rarely worried about having their car stolen, But with the decline in moral values and excessive growth, crime is a problem. Nothing can totally protect anyone against crime, but there certain things to do to help prevent it, said Robinson. He told the Chamber members to lock the doors and of their home at all diamonds, times; lock their car doors and place valuables in the trunk; dont advertise your everyday routine of leaving and return-crim- e ing home; and be aware of your surroundings when you travel to a new area, Beyond that, be prepared. The rezoning is to keep Magna in compliance with the citys master plan. The master plan was revised in 1989, and was recommended for updating every five years.
