Show man of the people comes to Magnas Catholic Church The Magna Times, Thursday, July 19, 1990 9 A KIM FOLSOM Magna Times Assistant Editor Father Stanislaw Herba is a man of the people. He is not concerned with form and procedures, but with involving the people of the parish in the church and in the community. Father Herba left his native Poland little more than a year after he was ordained a priest because he was sent out by his order, the Society of Christ, to work with the people of Brazil. He was the Director of the Minor Seminary in Camaqua, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil from 1966 to 1970. He then spent a year as an assistant pastor at Barao de Coregipe, Rio Grande do Sul. He taught high school level classes as part of his parish duties. Father Herba then became pastor of the parish of Ijui. The parish included twenty churches. He was the chaplin for the local hospital, taught high school, had a radio show, and had a newspaper at this time. Father Herba also studied philosphy at the local university at this time so he could teach on a higher level. Father Herba came to the United States in 1976 to work in Massachusetts. From 1977 to 1982, he worked with over one thousand Polish immigrant families in Rhode Island. In 1982 he became pastor of St. Stanislaus R6man Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon where he had a congregation n church. of 27 people and a When he left the parish in 1989 to come to Utah, he had over 160 families and a newly renovated church, and a parish bank account that was $30,000 in the black. Mira Loma, West Valley City, recently participated in the Malaysian International Royal Fleet Review in Penang, Malaysia while serving aboard the guided missile cruise USS Bunker Hill, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. The purpose of the visit is to support Malaysian international royal fleet activities and enhance the goodwill between the U.S. and Malaysia. The review included ships representing more than 15 nations. Father took over Our Lady of Lourdes in early July. He is anxious to talk one on one with his parishioners and he can speak Polish, English, Portuguese, Russian, French, and Latin to help him do the job. He also has a good understanding of Spanish. Father Herba has a world of ex- perience to offer his Magna parishioners and will be a welcome dition to the community as well.
