Recently, however, I heard that women who smoke not only may increase general health risks in their children, but also may increase the likelihood that their children will have asthma. Is this true? The information you heard was accurate. A recently published study concluded that mothers who smoke during pregnancy or when their children are very young may not only increase the risk of their children developing asthma but may also increase the likelihood that their children will develop asthma at an earlier age. This study suggested that environmental influences may contribute to or trigger the development of asthma, which traditionally has been viewed solely as a genetic condition. Asthma is the number one chronic illness affecting children. Approximately about half of the children who suffer from asthma grow out of it by adulthood, the condition can be Very disruptive while it persists. For example, asthma is the leading cause of hospitalizations, emergency room visits, and absenteeism in children. It also can inhibit some children from in traditional childhood "fr ntaking part lUiJwi activities. , j Asthma is a condition in which the air passages in the lungs hyperreact to various stimuli, which then makes A MID- - WEST BLIND COMPANY Ron Smith 4220 MIGNON DR. Asthmatic attacks can range from mild and occasional to sever and frequent. Although previous studies have suggested that passive exposure to cigarette smoke may cause respiratory problems or asthma, this recent study was the first to use a nationally representative sample and is the only study that looked at the age of onset of asthma. Researchers say that women should be encouraged to stop smoking not only for their own health but for the wellbeing of their children. In fact, they further asserted that women should be encouraged to quit smoking during pregnancy and during the first five years of their children's lives to help prevent them from developing this serious condition. Traditionally, pediatricians have been advised to wait for evidence of respiratory problems in children before advising mothers to quit smoking on their childrens behalf. This recent study provides more conclusive evidence that maternal smoking during pregnancy and after the birth of a child is harmful. If you're concerned about your smoking, you may want to enroll in a smoking cessation program. Ask your doctor to recommend a program that he or she thinks will be effective for you. 2396 EAST 7000 SOUTH. SuC 2763 SO STATE. SLC YiWOie-- i Shaves Beard Trimmings ytoj!)
