My aunt has been treated for several years for her drinking problem and she has always been told that her drinking is the result of her depression. They go hand in hand supposedly for a long time. Should she continue to and she has been on use them? How serious is depression anyway? Looking for Answers ts ' Dear Looking: . It would be inappropriate for me to say that your aunt should stop or but Ill share my own philosophy with you. continue taking I believe alcoholism and depression are two completely different illnesses. You can have one without the other, or have symptoms of both simultaneously. For a long time, it was felt thatt depression caused alcoholism but current research had done much to change that assumption. How serious is depression? For women especially, it causes serious problems, however it is a medical disease that affects both men and women. For both, suickde is often the result. Meen are more successful at committing suicide than women even though four times more women attempt it; but, together they account for 75,000 deaths a year. Seen from a family point of view, it is clear that a predisposition toward depression and suicidal behavior is inherited, being passed from one generation to the next through the genes. Also, children who are raised in families where they are abused, where parents are extremely critical and where the focus is mainly on their inadequacies, seem to have an even greater likelihood of suicides. When parents are depressed themselves, it becomes much more diffi ult for them to meet the needs of ttheir children and the problems seem to escalate from there. .. mood disorder that is directly In essence, depression is a affected by environmental factors. But, video cameras scare me silly. In the old days there were two types of home movies: Yours and someone elses. Yours were nostalgic glimpses of the past featuring the people you love doing things that are unbelievably cute. Without exception, your movies-ende- d too soon. Other peoples home movies had one major flaw. They were of other people. This made them boring, repetetive, and sleep inducing. Other peoples home movies couldnt end soon enough. Time is relative especially when watching home movies. In the old days all home movies were only about three minutes long. Thats all a roll of 8mm film runs. Even by the time you showed Uncle Harrys sneeze in slow motion and used the reverse to show Dad shooting out of the swimming pool feet first to land on the diving board dry as cake and watched Aunt Martha remove forkfuls of meat from her mouth and set them on her plate where they formed an untouched steak of a size any cow would have been honored to die for, even then you were done in five minutes. But today there are video cameras. And Im scared. To think of that five minutes of agony being drawn out for two, four, or even six hours. Thats torture. Id sooner rent m basement to Charles Manson. And if that doesn't make you tremble, imagine this. You've been invited to dinner at a neighbor's home. After dinner your host begins to act suspicious and you know one of two things is about to happen - either home movies or an Amway pitch. Pray for Amway. In the old days home movies were avoidable. While the host set up the screen, prepared the projector, and loaded the movie youxould race to the bathroom and swallow a razor blade. Rectal bleeding is an acceptable excuse for leaving early. Meanwhile, your wife has downed a half box of baking soda in the kitchen. Projectile vomiting is almost as effective. Today the rules have changed. Your host walks over to the television -and hardly an appliance of terror casually slips a tape into the VCR. Your adrenalin refuses to pump since you could be about to enjoy Little Shop of Horrors or at worst you can sleep through Chariots of Fire. By the time you realize you are little Suzies entire dance program, (1 hr, 17 min) followed by Billies science fair, (3hrs 13 min) and the rest of the tape devoted to an inventory of Mikies baseball cards you make a lame excuse and charge to the bathroom. , Since nobody uses razor blades anymore, you swallow a Norelco Tripleheader. If youre lucky, all those years of razor blades will have sufficiently softened the intestinal wall. othors. ca Thatll fix em. ii VIRGO children. loose dentures? i - toko coroof Financially you might gat lucky today wins. bird The early opportunities immediately. should MALARKEY- .
