Show THE MAGNA TIMES, THURSDAY, APRIL Clint Meyers 3 hits BY KENT GOBLE Clint Meyers gave up only three scratch singles, one unearned run, struck out eight and walked five in 6 23 innings against the Cottonwood Colts Wednesday afternoon April 20, 1988 at Magna but the Colts won anyway 4 in a real heartbreaker. The loss dropped the Pirate Region 3 record to 4 while Cottonwood improved to Meyers relieved Willie Forster and Derek Hathaway with only one out in the top of the first inning and and Cottonwood leading 4-- 0 after two walks, a hit batter, a triple by Colt pitcher Brad Sorensen and a wind aided bloop double by Terry Keehan. Meyers promptly struck out Scott McKinnon and 5-- 3-- 2. cause Cottonwood retired Greg Carroll on a grounder. The only run off Meyers came in the sixth inning aand was unearned. As it Mined out, it was the Colts game winner and was scored without a Colt basehit. Ray Strong walked, went fo third on a pick off throw that got away and scored on another throwing error. Meanwhile, the Pirates did not have ll base runner until Justin Bateman singled up the middle to lead off the top of the third. After Willie Forster singled to put runners at first and second, Sorensen retired the Pirates on an infield fly and an out at the plate. The Pirates finally got untracked in the sixth inning. Trenton Goble led off with a single to left. Willie Forster lin Titans find JV tough Bashing with the Cyprus Pirate JV is like trying to out fast break the L. A. Lakers. You may put some points on the board but you cant out score them as the Olympus Titans discovered Thursday afternoon, April 21, 1988 at Olympus, losing to the Pirates in a donnybrook 16-With a comfortable 10-- 1 lead after four innings, Coach Fratto cleared his bench to give his entire team some playing time. The Titans chose the moment to make a run of their own and managed to close the Pirate lead to one, 10-after six. But die Pirates had only paused for a temporary breather. In the top pf the seventh, Trenton Goble walked, stole 9. 9, second and scored on Lance Gibsons third hit of the game as a prelude to the Pirates grand finale. Keith Evans and Scott Eyre then walked to load them up and Brad Rammell uncorked a downtown, sliding home head first for an to seal die Pirate victory 16-- 9 with four RBIs. Rammell added his grandaddy swat to an earlier triple as part of a Pirate hit parade of 13 as the kids from Magna continue to pound the daylights out of the ball. Keith Evans also pitched five innings of three hit ball while striking out five and walking none as Frattos Fellas pushed their record to a glossy inside-the-park- er 8-- 3. ed a hit to right and Brad Rammell scored them both with a booming stan-du- p triple to deep center. Rammell scored as Hathaway reached on an error. Troy Miller ran for Hathaway. He went to third on Sorensens errant pick off throw and scored on Scott Eyres base hit to center. y Sorensen hit Bateman with an inside pitch in die botton of the seventh to put . the tying run on but he was stranded at second as Sorensen retired the final Pirate batters. In all, Sorensen gave up six hits, walked none and struck out one. The Pirates allowed only five hits, struck out nine but were hurt with seven bases-on-ball- s, two throwing er- rors, a hit batter, a successful pickoff at first and an out at the plate. Trenton Goble holds the runner while Keith Evans takes the sign from Andy Gonzales during the loss 5-- 4 V f 1- 4-- N tfps A ft tS Oerendipity On a positive note, the Pirates have received outstanding pitching performances from Brad Rammell in their 1 victory over Olympus. He allowed only five hits and struck out five while going the distance. Add Clint Meyers 6 23 innings of three hit relief against the Colts, Willie Forsters two complete games in Junior Varsity action including his against Granite and Shane Andersons five inning one hit performance against East and it appears that the Pirates are coming on strong with their pitching. With seven region 3 games remaining they have the potential to finish strong despite one run losses to Cottonwood and Skyline and a 4-- 1 losing effort . against Granger. Fishin ? ports 5-- Two good times to go fishin no-hitt- er game. - Evans handcuffed the Titans, scattering three hits in five Innings. Cyprus-OIymp- us placed in the heartbjreak category alongside the Skyline and Cottonwood single run losses, varsity Coach Tom Given has been given a true taste of the potion Brad Rammell can mix with his smoking fastball and excellent : breaking pitches. Rammell confirmed that he is roun- ding into top form on the mound as he went the route against Olympus scattering five hits, striking out eight as the Pirates won 1 at Olympus. Add Clint Meyers 6 23 inning three hit eight strickout performance against Cottonwood and there is strong evidence both Rammell and Meyers are rounding into top form on the mound. The Pirates are counting on strong pitching to compliment their improved hitting to carry them to victories in their final seven Region 3 games. In Junior Varsity action, the Pirates have been on a tear since losing 12-- 8 to Granger April 6th. They have been unstoppable , ambushing Skyline 1 on Willie Forsters three hitter, blitzing East 15-- 4 with a ton of hits, double digit stolen bases and the five innings of shutout pitching by Shane Anderson who scattered one hit while striking out a grundle. A topper was Willie Forsters against Granite 0 and, for those who prefer lusty hitting, theres the 15-- 9 pulverization of Olympus that included 13 Pirates hits. Brad Rammells grandslam, another bushel of stolen bases and Keith Evans five innings of three hit, five strickout pitching. Having pushed their team batting average over.300 for the season, the 3 Pirates have terrorized the opposition, averaging almost ten runs, a dozen hits and double digit stolen bases in the last five games, all suggesting to Coach Bob Fratto that he has a winning combination with more to come in the final seven games of the season. Fishin to them is on going, like a ritual, or a way of life. I knew this one family where there was no clear line between religion and fly fishin. The kids learn to flick the fly rod almost as soon as they learn to say their prayers, and before they master bike riding. To die Fishin Family, a fresh trout hole is like a fresh start in life; a recharge, a renewal on a new dispensation. Its a craving like the bar fly goes for drink, or the chocolate lover goes for the sauce. I had this friend who had two major purposes in life: to fish and not to work, or at least not to let work interfere with his fishin. He discovered early that there were lots of jerks in the world, the number increases rapidly the farther one gets from his favorite stream. He liked to start his fishin days early and make up for it by coming back late. He was addicted like the druggie, with the woods as his habit, the stream his dependent need. I asked him once if he thought fishing necessary for success in this life and salvation in the next. He didnt answer, but rather went on stringing his line and baiting his hook. Although he wouldnt answer die question directly, he did say that those who failed as fly fishermen could always migrate to die west coast and become lawyers, certified public accountants, or presidents of airplane companies. Fishermens wives should believe that all anglers are prodigal and should be welcomed home. And fishermens kids, when assigned to dig in the garden, should look for worms while turning soil. A fishermans wife must learn not to say, we like the little ones they make the best earing. Real fishermen like to go to places not built for small fish or small fishermen. Whenever I went fishing with my friend, although I never pretended to be a great fisherman, I always knew how to dress just wear old clothes. Since I had plenty of old clothes, I was always in vogue. Everytime we fished together he always told me the same thing. He said, the fish are out farther. Cast out farther. It was impossible though, since casting is an act of skill. We must not be dismayed, fishin season is upon us. As it is written, when the dogwoods come into bloom, its time to tie on a fly. Lets all go fishin! SIMONS SAYS: There is no use driving 50 miles to fish when you can be just as unsuccessful closer to home. SIMONS SAYS: We used to fish in a canal north of town that was very polluted. When we caught fish they begged us not to throw them back.. ' -- 5-- TOKOS BIGGEST SALE OF THE YEAR. f 5-- no-hitt- er 5-- 8-- Football Si00 coaches $50.42mo. Model 20622 Guaranteed Tb Start. And run the Pirates did, piling up twelve stolen bases including two successful double steals enroute to a convincing 15-- 4 bloitzing of East Thursday, April 14, 1988. And the Pirate onslaught was so 3-- 0, devastating that their larceny had netted them eight steals and a 4 lead plus the plea from Easts coach to abondon the thievery. But coach Boby Darin Fratto, with a song in his heart and a smile on his lips simply grinned and replied of the speedy Pirates we dont have any stolen bases, do we?
