KENT GOBLE MAGNA TIMES SPORTS WRITER One thing you need to remember when youre playing the Cyprus Pirates, you havent won until their last man is out. The Bonneville ' Lakers seemingly forgot that in fact their important match-u- p against the Pirates Friday afternoon, April 1, 1988 at ; is rk lead. Catcher Bob Roest worked but the Meyers for a down and settled Pirate pitcher forced Scott Kee to hit into a timely double play then retired Steve Cottle on a comebacker to finally get out of a rocky first inning. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the Rick Senior lefty, first, Westmoreland and Derek Hathaway lined out to Kee at short. Exit the Pirates. Meyers was back in control in the base-on-bal- top of the second inning. He worked Scott Samples for a comebacker and then struck out Paul Wold and Shaun Sylvester, silencing the hot Laker bats. But Westmoreland, after a lead off hit by Clint Meyers, got ... Keith. Evans to ground out and then . . tagged Meyers out at the plate after Mark .Gallegos missed the bunt on a suicide squeeze then retire Mark on a grounder to third. The Lakers went for an insurance run in the top of the third. Vanshaar walked, stole second and scored on Smiths hit after Meyers struck out Holmes. Roest lined out deep to Paul Barbre in center and Mark Gallegos made a great twisting catch of a blooper off of Kees bat to end the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Pirate bats remained dormant as Westmoreland used only six pitches to retire the punchless Pirates. Justin Bateman grounded to second. Tom Driffell flied to right and Willie Forster grounded the first pitch to , er third. In the top of the fourth, Steve Cottle ripped a shot past Tom Driffell at first and Scott Samples worked Meyers for his third walk putting runners at first and second and no outs. Tom Given sensed this was the moment to make a change and replaced Meyers with Brad Rammell. Meyers had pitched well after getting past the wild first inning with three complete innings. He gave up five hits, four runs, walked three and' struck out four. Andy Gonzales grounded to short to open the bottom of the fourth and was out on a close call at first. Brad Rammell then forced Westmoreland to throw nine pitches then bounced a hit past the third baseman into left field. Trenton Goble ran for Rammell. Derek Hathaway then to Holmes at the lined a second base bag as was out on the throw to first for a Laker double play ending the inning. Westmoreland seemed in total control. The Laker hitting was to face total extinction however, as Rammell mixed some good off speed pitches with a smoking fastball to handcuff BYU. One was a skinny guy and always on a diet; one was an all-tim- ? man in the Bonneville game was Mark Gallegos 2, playing the Cyprus second base sacker. Big RBI grounded to second to end the Pirate rally but the delay was only temporary. As if sensing a slight change in momentum, Rammell came out firing bullets and mowed down the side on strikes. Kee, Cottle and Samples all went down swinging. over in the Laker Nonetheless, diigout, celebration a premature victory was developing. After Westmoreland, though all, surrendering a run and three hits, seemed to have enough left to finish off the Pirates. No cause to worry, right? Wrong! Enter the bottom of the sixth. Willie Forster blooped a pitch behind the mound and Westmoreland dropped the ball for an error. With Forster at first, Andy Gonzales laced a curve into the hole past the third sackers glove into left. Rammell worked Westmoreland for another 10 pitches before striking Baseball coachess are Tom given, varsity; and Bob Fratto, J.V. out. But Derek Hathaway got a hit off the pitchers glove and Meyers got an RBI with a line shot to center. 2 Lakers. After Westmoreland struck out Evans on a breaking ball, Mark Gallegos blooped a wounded duck soft liner into medium right field to clear the sacks and put the Pirates ahead for the first time Suddenly the Pirates were ahead and the Lakers had to face Rammell. Rammel . the pitcher and Rammell the fielder. He used both in the top of the seventh to help seal the Pirate victory. Rammell struck out pinch batter Kelly Brooks but Brooks reached first when the ball got away at the plate. Then came perhaps the key play of the game. Rammells pick off throw to Goble at first caught Brooks off the bag and he was tagged out the same player. It was a defensive key to the game because Banshaar followed with the only hit off of Rammell, a line drive double 4-- 5--4. The S.L. There is an old rule of thumb among seasoned bass fishermen that says, when the dogwoods come into bloom, its time to tie on a worm. Plastic worm fishing will come into its own for spring-tim- e bass angling. One of the most versatile lures in the tackle box, a worm can be fished effectively, several differ- ent ways. The mistake most fishermen make is in their approach. Remember, if you can see the bass, chances are it has already seen you. A trick used by Florida guides is to mark the location of the beds with a stick and come back a couple hours later, the Bonneville batters. Both loved a good joke, especially if it were on the other one. I have chronicled here below some of their better antics : I was sitting in the Granger High school parking lot talking out of my car window to Hook. It was a pleasant summer day. The other member of the duo pulled in with his pickup truck and set his bumper against the front bumper of Hooks car . I guess Hook had his car in neutral, cause he suddely went flying backwards across the parking lot, at forty miles per hour. That seemed to be the beginning of a little friendly vendetta that went on for several years. It was who could get the other one best. You should know, dear reader, that both of these fellas were Junior Varsity basketball coaches during the era we are talking about; thats where the fun started, when they played each other. Hook brought his Lancer team into Magna for the annual battle. The football player filled the game ball with helium and made the officials to it. When the ball was thrown up and the centers jumped, the doctored ball went right to the ceiling and stuck there. The coach who was the trickster held a straight face and blamed the chemistry teacher. Retaliation was certainly in order, dont you think? Heres how Hook did it. When the Pirates went east to Granger the ball was doped again. This time the Lancers allowed the visitors to get the opening tip. When the player went to dribble the ball it wouldnt bounce. He put the ball on the floor and it . stayed there. This was the beginning of the saga between the two pranksters (coaches). Things really warmed up in the spring where both were Varsity baseball coaches. The Pirates were visiting Grangers diamond. It was a nice day, but the umps didnt show up. It was agreed that the rival coaches would call the balls and strikes from behind the mound while their opponents batted. Tilings went fairly well until the last half of the last inning. The Pirates held a one run lead over Hooks team, but Granger had the sacks loaded, two outs, and a three and two count on the hitter. Dont throw this pitch anywhere near the strike zone, the coach told his pitcher. Keep it high and outside, where he cant hit it. The dutiful pitcher did as he was told and kept the ball beyond the batters reach. As soon as the pitch went by the batter, the coach behind the mound yelled, Strike three, Lets go home. These true tales are not all that happened between the two coaches. I can tell you more, if you have a couple of hours to spare. by Larry Colombo however, the taxpayer should remember three important facts: )1 NEIGHBOR v 33 Brad Rammell shown playing at shortstop. But the Big Guy was to slow getting up a head of steam and a heads up throw by Andy Gonzales nipped him at first to end the inning. With Rammell putting the damper on the Lakers, it was time for the Pirate bats to come alive. Clint Meyers beat out a grounder to deep short and reached second as Evans grounded out short to first. Mark Gallegos, Pirate second baseman, was out on a check swing.bouncer to Cottle at first, Meyers going to third. Justin Bateman then stroked a breaking pitch into center to score Meyers and the Pirates were on the board. Troy Miller was a pinch runner for Bateman. With a comfortable 1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning and theyre ace pitcher on the mound, the Laker dugout was doing a bit of early celebrating. But the Pirates would have no part of it and stung Bonneville with four runs on four hits and an error to take their first lead of the game and then made it hold up for a great comeback victory. The Lakers struck early. Right fielder Jason Vanshaar lashed a hit hit off the glove of Brad Rammell diving to his righti and scurried to second on an Andy Gonzales passed ball. Jason Holmes chopped a curve ball toward Derek Hathaway at third and was safe when the long throw was beyond the reach of first baseman Tom Driffell. The play scored Vanshaar, an unearned run.
