Ultimately, you are totally For the past three years, I have been drinking and using drugs and no one but my closest friends have been aware of what Ive been doing. I dont think I was ever addicted or hooked, but I found it easier to use than not to. I guess deep down I knew they were bad for me, but for some reason I always found an excuse to continue using them. That is, until just recently. I want to straighten up. Ive met a girl who I know does not approve of using drugs of any kind. I guess I never had a good reason to quit using before, but she appears to be what I need. So far, its been about two weeks and I feel terrible. I am tired, irritable, and depressed. I dont have any energy and I dont have any desire to do anything. If this is what its like to be drug free, I dont know that I really want it as much as I thought I did. My question is, has all my previous drug use created a change internally, somehow, that I will be incapable of changing back to a normal level? With this in mind, while encouraging the positive move you have made to quit using drugs, I would suggest you consider on additional piece of information. If your reason for quitting drugs is entirely because of your feelings for someone else, it is inevitable that you will lose your motivation at sometime in the future. For someone to kick the drug habit, itjs essential that you do it for yourself. Only then will there be a strong enough reason to maintain sobriety over a long period of time. But where you are right now is a good place to start. When anyone uses drugs over a three year period, even if they fully believe that they are not addicted, there is a good possibility that a physiological psychological and-o- r addiction process has already occurred. What that means is that once a decision is made to quit and the ingestion of drugs has stopped, the body will invariably experience withdrawal symptoms. From what you say in your letter, it would appear that you are experiencing many of the common witthdrawal signs and symptoms. And even though you may not need any type of medical intervention, it is not uncommon to a wide variety of changes in perception and moods for a period of three weeks to six months. Other people and outside circumstances are not the determining factors in how you feel and how you choose to respond. With this in mind, you are the master of your fate. As Ive said before, we can act ourselves into a new way of thinking or think ourselves into a new way of acting. Either process will work, but I would initially focus on the behavior. Chances are that the new behavior will feel a little strange for a while so dont.let that throw you off. As AA puts it, FAKE IT TILL YOU CAN MAKE IT. Things will straighten out. But, it will probably take some time. In the mean time, identify the kinds of feelings you want and behave in a way that you think will generate those kinds of feelings. Its not a complicated process, but its one which will takesome effort.
